It's a bug in the D700's firmware: the person the autofocus locks onto is kind of sucked dry of all color.

I gave my D700 back when Nikon confirmed this bug and said they would fix it in the D700fc coming next winter.

Firmware bug! And I thought it might be one of the new "Art" modes... maybe something like "Random Photoshop Tricks". 🙂
