The BBBs are great; I have two of them, one of the originals and one of the smallest versions. However, their lack of stiffness does make it hard to remove or add gear at times, mostly when they are full. When I take my Ikon, second lens, lens shades and film in the medium size bag it works fine. But sometimes I also take my DP1 along with its accessories, then it gets hard to manage. Or with the DP1 and a second P&S camera the same thing happens. My iPhone is usually in there too. In these cases I have to use one hand to hold open the main compartment and navigate gear in and out carefully. Having stuff in the pockets reduces access to the main compartment. In other words, it would help if adding to the pockets caused hem to bulge more outward than inward. Also, because there is no stiffness the bag "wraps" around you, which is another reason I have to hold it open sometimes.
So basically, with the BBB rather full it gets tough to manage. A little stiffness would even when it is not full. That said, I still prefer them over others because they fit the gear well, have the right kinds of pockets and are light. I would prefer them in black, but the blue is a nice blue. It might also help if there was a (removable) divider i the main compartment, so that two cameras could sit next to each other without rubbing.
I've never found the lack of padding to be an issue. The velcro works really well (it holds, but not too tightly and opens without a lot of noise), and the handle is easy to adjust. I'm very critical about industrial design and the BBB is great as is and taken for what it is. It's goal is simplicity for the rangefinder or compact camera photographer and it accomplishes that well. Start adding more stuff to the design and it's no longer then BBB.
