Best scanner today??

what are you scanning? Film scanners are great if you don't need to do large format.

I have become a huge fan of the Epson V750 for medium and large format. It is sub-optimal for 35mm.

like David I am very satisfied with the Epson V750.... And I think you can get it for far less than 1.500 USD, cheers

I'm in a similar situation, though with a desire to batch scan uncut film.

For 35mm I had the Minolta 5400 that could do six frames at a time, that is before it stopped being recognized by all of my computers.

I have the V700, and it's fine for most index scans of 35mm of four 6 frame strips (if you prepare them right - if the film is not flat it is such a pain).

These days I'm dreaming of batch scanning. I'm seeing that the 4000ED and the 5000ED can scan uncut film. Is there anything else out there that can do that which doesn't cost more than $1000k ?

Either an Epson v700 or 750 or the dedicated plustek. They all look good. I have a Nikon 9000 which I got a year ago. I probably would've been just as happy with one of these others.

Some scanners can change focus by moving the lens and/or scanning device. The Nikons do this, and can obtain sharper images than flatbeds or other fixed focus scanners. The Epsons get around the problem to some degree by having two focus planes.

What does this mean?

You could check out Microtek M1/F1, they have autofocus I believe. Also, I've seen s/h Imacons going for not much more than your budget on eBay.

Used 4000EDs can be had for well under $1000. I paid $700 for mine about a year ago. It's a fine scanner.

The standard Nikon SA-21 film strip holder can be easily modified to scan whole rolls.
