Hi,
I just got myself a Canon 9000F for scanning negs (I know a flatbed will never be as good as a film scanner, but I want to do 120 film with it, and a 120 film scanner is way too expensive)
Some results from it are actually very good, and only a little soft, but some are awful, the awful ones are from slide film, and the negs are a little curved.
The good ones are from C41, and the negs curved, but not so much.
Is there a difference between scanning slide vs print film? or is just the neg curvature that is the issue?
has anyone else had this with the Canon scanners, and if so, did some anti-newton glass help (like the better scanning kit?

You need a very large Dmax for slide film like over 4.
For negative film not so much.
For negative film not so much.

I have the 8800f and I use Betterscanning.com holder for MF negs. It's MUCH better than the original flimsy holder. Can't help you with slides as I seldom shoot them. I can't recall that I've had any scanning problems with slides though.

Hammerklavier, the betterscanning.com holder is for MF negs so the size is not right for 35mm neg stripes. I wouldn't buy it if you do 35mm scanning only.
However, if you can find a piece of AN (Anti Newton) glass you could make a suitable mask for 35mm stripes out of paper and scan directly on the scanner glass. Place the paper mask on the scanner, then the neg stripe on the mask, emulsion side down and the AN glass on top AN side down. That's what I do when I need to scan 4x5 negs for which I don't have a suitable holder.

I did a quick experiment with my 9000F, I put the 35mm negs direct on the glass, with a small bit of glass on top (normal glass, so newtons rings were expected, and delivered), but other than the rings, results were better than the holder.
Also, I know everyone says it, make sure emulsion side is down, makes a huge difference, on Velvia, i wasn't that easy to tell, but if the the preview is flipped, then it's wrong.
Will need get some AN glass I think, I plan to do 6x7 negs on it, so it'll need be a decent size.

You might want to give this diy trick a try using toothpicks that Mike posted on his flickr account. It worked for me when I had my Canon flatbed but I moved on to another scanner....

I thought the preview scan should be right side up (meaning that folks heads are up or tops of buildings up, etc.) and text reads correctly left to right. Film (positive or negative) oriented to match those conditions. True or false?

+1 on all of the above. I have also taped 35mm negs to the betterscanning.com 120 holder when the negs were too curled for the regular holder, and that works too but it's much slower than using the Canon 35mm holder.
