BSometer?!

Actually, I find this forum quite helpful and interesting. Personally, I don`t care much if somebody needs to tape his Leica, uses a black-paint Leica MP or prefers shooting with or without meter.... :)

If you want "cliquey", try the LUG! Actually, I find RFF less hostile/ negative/ more friendly, but often more trivial, than most 'net forums.

Bill

Aren't there only 7 or 8 guys and one gal at the LUG?

I think that Pablito says most of it actually. Most of the dumb (to me anyway) questions that seem to repeat over and over but I just skip reading them so that it doesn't annoy.
The thing I dislike most is the opinions expressed by some on a piece of kit, who obviously either a/ haven't used it or b/ are blinded by the leica light! It happened last week when someone stated that an Ultron was way inferior to a 'cron v.4. Total b@@l@cks and will no doubt put someone off of buying a fantastic bit of kit. I wish people would offer opinion based on use and real experience rather than fantasy and maybe a need to justify that the money they spent actually delivered better results and made them a better photog by buying x brand. Through this site I've learnt a lot about RF and photography in general. I pick up pointers to a certain lens but then in the end try it for myself before offering any advice to others. rant over.

Personally I'm always amazed by those who obsess over versions of lenses. Yes, late 35 pre-aspheric Summiluxes are detectably better than early ones in almost all shots, and the same is true of 90 Summicrons; but most of the time, as I said before, even I can't tell what lens I used, as long as it's above the 'quality threshold' where it can take better pictures than I can.

Generally I buy a lens for speed, handling and compactness; only quite rarely do I find the image quality unacceptable, but sometimes (24 Summilux, 50 C-Sonnar, 50 Summarit, 75 Summicron) I do see a bit of extra 'magic'.

Although the 35 Ultron is sharper, contrastier and less flare-prone than my old Summilux, I much prefer the extra half stop and the fingertip (instead of collar) focusing. And although the 90 Apo-Lanthar is optically superb and (slightly) more compact than my old pre-aspheric Summicron, I prefer the extra speed of the Summicron.

One of the reasons Leica lenses are so highly regarded, in my view, is that some of them strike the best possible balance of desirable features, except low cost. Because they've been making them for a very long time, and have made so many different kinds, even if only 10% of their designs do this, that's still a lot more designs than most people have made, let alone excelled at.

Cheers,

R.

I have no problem with BS, I produce some myself and my respective meter is quite accurate, I feel.

I'm more bothered about people going on and on about how much money gear costs, extrapolating what others can/can't afford, and always assuming that the most expensive gear is necessarily the best.

Would like to have more photo threads, too. And in particular see more photos of the few posters that are very verbal but rarely show results.

only when you get the v3

only when you get the v3

Do you realize the v1 has the magic. V2s all suffer from cost cutting, V3s went back to quality, but v1 is the one to have, unless Canon, then v3s, next v2s.

I can't believe you'd mention V1 and V2 in the same sentence! Anyone who uses V1 after V2 came out is a fool.

/heh

Exquisitely stated.

Those who measure time in fractions of a century are annoying too.

...

(1) Does ANYONE automatically assume that most expensive = best?

(2) More photo threads. Maybe some of those who post have links/websites?

(3) What's the problem with fractions of a century?

Cheers,

GREAT NEWS HOT OFF THE PRESS! I just heard they're bringing out a DIGITAL version! Think it's going to be called the dBS (not to be confused with the Aston Martin of the same name).

Why are you guys talking about German Secret Weapons!

THIS IS A CAMERA FORUM!

And you rarely hear about the V3. Multi-stage V2.

Sigh...the things I end up doing when my FTP is large...

The moment you look away from this screen...that's right, the one *you* are looking at right now, you are open to far more possibilities in life. You can actually photograph things that are not a computer screen for starters.

So one of the most ironic things to me about online photo communities is that they are in some ways the most contrary occurence to photography, for they surely prevent it from happening.

I'm sure the number of great life experiences let alone photographs that are not experienced due to the internet is staggering....

Whilst I find this somewhat odd from someone with 609 posts, I can't argue with the veracity of the statements regarding time spent on the internet vs actually doing the things I like about photography - taking, developing, editing and looking at pictures. It has been something that I have felt for some time, and spending time on the forum in some ways seems to have taken away from that. No implied criticism of anyone, this is just me.

Therefore, I'll wish you all well and good luck and success in your photography, and in your lives.

Goodbye.
