Camera and Coffee

looks good, very sturdy.

i much prefer wrist straps these days and find neck straps a pain lately.

joe

I just can't get accustomed to wrist straps - too tight around my neck. And I can't raise the camera to my eye!

Seriously, I like them too. I have several that screw into the tripod thread on the bottom of the camera.

I like wrist straps for small RF's, like Canonet and Ricoh. But for SLR's I prefer Op-Tec neopreme neck straps.
And then if I'm stalking the woods for nature/landscape shots, I keep my SLR mounted on the tripod, over my shoulder (gasp!). I know, we're told not to do that, but I've done it for years and never had a problem with it.

Been here a while now but this is my very first post in this thread with camera, coffee and a new piece of gear 🙂 :

Specifically my "new" Jupiter-11 made in 1961 that arrived complete with passport papers! I'm impressed with this lens and so far I've only been able to use it wide-open or very close to that. I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do at f8 or f11...

I just uploaded a few pics into my gallery here and one or two of them are taken with this lens, the best one is actually shot at f4 - its not perfect - a bit too grainy for my liking but its not bad. The distance scale was almost at infinity on that shot.

Pete, looked at your gallery. Nice. I hope you used tripod on that 135/4 lens....if you didn't - you got some steady hands!

Peter,
Is that a 135/4 lens? I'm not familiar with the Jupiters, it looks a lot like the Sonnar 135/4. Nice shot!

Its a Sonnar 135/4 knock-off Doug. If you recall I commented on the uncanny resemblance of your Sonnar 135 to the Jupiter a few days ago - now you can see what I was talking about. 🙂 This is supposed to be one of the best Russian lenses with resolution higher than similar German glass. I don't understand these numbers, but here is one set of figures for this lens that I pulled from a forum somewhere:

Elmarit-M 135/2.8 46 lp/mm 35lp/mm
Jupiter-11 135/4 52 lp/mm 35lp/mm

As I said in the post, I would really like to see how the lens performs at smaller apertures, but at a purchase price of $37, I am not going to complain. 🙂

Oh yes Natalia I used a tripod, at those light levels I have to unfortunately. I also have a med. yellow filter on the front of that lens that loses me another stop so even though I'm using 400ASA film I'm too close to the shakes... 🙁

I'm reposting this since it seems to have been deleted in the changing and rechanging of the forum.

My Jupiter 9 that I traded with Stephen G arrived this weekend. It has the traditional cleaning marks that a lens hood should take care of (ordered) and stiff focusing (as advertised.) It's a 1958 vintage. It was a little soft for him wide open which may be because it was on a Leica (different lens flange to film plane distance.) This will be my first telephoto.

I contacted Oleg and he quoted $20 to $30 US for a CLA, usually $20 with an additional $10 return shipping.

Testing has begun.

I rented a DVD over the weekend call "Cigarettes and Coffee". Made me think of this thread. It's a series of 11 vignettes about people talking over cigarettes and coffee. A little strange (as my wife said) but I enjoyed it. It is done totally in B&W; some of the photography and composition are great. If you get a chance, rent it for the photography and maybe you'll enjoy the off-beatness of it. ("The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" is another off-beat movie I found fanastic.)

If you liked that, then rent "A Night on Earth" (1991), also by Jim Jarmush - much the same thing, only this time it's 5 taxi drivers and their passengers. Even funnier if you also understand French, Italian and/or Finnish since there are double-entendres everywhere that don't translate into the sub-titles.

I've heard that movie was good from start to Finnish - LOL.
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Yeah, I loved both those films, too! I already saw the first episode of 'Coffee and Cigarettes' (the one with Roberto Benigni) a couple of years ago at a short film festival. My favorite episode is the one with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits.
If you liked the movie, also check out Jarmusch's earlier one, 'Down By Law', or films by Aki Kaurismäki, who has the same kind of humor (he's one of my favorites).

Jarmusch is a genius. I also just have seen the "Coffee and Cigarettes" (in a movie theater), i really enjoyed it. The "Night on Earth" is a favourite of mine; "Down by law" is also very good.
Interesting to see that Jarmusch prefers to use alot of the same actors in his movies.
Another nice one is "The man who was not there". I think that's from Kaurisma:ki.
Another great new director is a japanese guy (can't remember his name now), he made the "Zatoichi" which is (a bit in the Dancing in the Dark -style) very very cool, with fantastic photography.😀

I loved Kitano's 'Hana-Bi' (hope I don't confuse him with another Japanese director...)
