Brilliant book (Erwitt's 'Snaps'), one of my all time favourite monographs. Last weekend I went to the Christies viewing for their recent photo sale. One of the images on display was Erwitt's shot of the Great Dane legs, the leather booted legs, and the chihuahua. Cracks me up everytime!

I saw the Erwitt retrospective when it was in Brussels (I stumbled upon it). I have never walked round a gallery laughing so hard in my life.

On a 2 hr train journey this morning, I got through his Museum Watching book. Brilliant. I bought both Snaps and Museum Watching when I saw his retrospective at the Nat Museum of Photograophy Film and Telly in Bradford last month. The man's got a superb eye.

jl: Very nice photos. Both cameras are lovely, but I especially like the Isolette; that's an excellent job on the leather and bellows.

Thank you! The Isolette was rebuilt inside and out by Mr. Jurgen Kreckel ( found at http://www.certo6.com/index.html or as certo6 on ebay). I requested a green leather cover and tan bellows. He is a bit pricey (probably not for what it entails) but does beautiful work.
Best,

jl-lb.ms: Those Contessa's are wonderful cameras, aren't they? I got to use my father-in-law for a short while. Sharpest lens I've ever seen.
Bob: Nice kiev!!! You're gonna love, it trust me!!

I'm looking forward to the first roll of film out of it. Karen has wrapped it for my birthday celebration which will happen tomorrow, now that everyone is back in town. I'm hoping that any light leaks or shutter isues are nill (or as close as possible to it). The viewfinder is a bit hazy.captainslack said:jl-lb.ms: Those Contessa's are wonderful cameras, aren't they? I got to use my father-in-law for a short while. Sharpest lens I've ever seen.

It appears to have been used and not a "new in box." But it looks to have been nicely cared for. The take up spool is homemade. I already have a "watch" on one (probably buy a couple) from Alex-Photo.
I have also been scoping out j-12's and j-9's, as well as viewfinders.
I'm wondering why I waited so long. The proof will be in the taking.
Wish me luck.

I never considered owning a Leica M. Never used one, looked at one, nada. I never understood what the big deal was with these cameras. I saw this ad and something just snapped and right away I'm buying an M, weird. I won't try to describe what it's like to use but I will say that people should try one before they form an opinion of them.
Photo iaken with a Leica II, 9cm f4 Elmar on ERA film.

Nice M2, Jim.
Leica, you either get it or you don't. If you don't, consider yourself lucky (and less poor).
It's like FSU gear: you either get a kick out of it, or you don't. Many who don't have a hard time understanding those who do.

"There are men and women whose cultivated tastes admit of no pretence or insincerity, whose trained minds judge values fairly, who demand simply, decisively, the best. They may be few but it is for them that the Leica is made."
This is taken from another Lecia ad. I still have not drifted to the dark side.

Wayne, There are so many great cameras out there today that no one needs to use any particular brand to get a good photo. And only the weak of mind believe the hype that's used to sell anything. Maybe at the when the ad in my aviator was written (the 1930's?) it had some small truth but not today. I do think the girl is pretty though. What do you think? JimG
