As a buyer, I would be interested in a serial # of a camera to ensure version, style, authenticity etc., but sellers are understandably reluctant to divulge these, as there are (apparently) now, a number of scams using this information.

So, as I am trying to sell my prized Leica body, 2 buyers, almost at the same time, ask me the same question "What is the serial number of the camera ?"

How would you respond to this ? Refusing to divulge may kill the possible sale, but responding with the information may open one up to a scam.

This is what I did-

"...It is 2781XXX. If you need all the numbers for a specific reason, let me know why, and I may be able to give out the numbers. The camera was bought from Xxxxxx, Yyyy Zzzz, and the receipt can be provided to the buyer with the camera..."

I wondered how often this comes up, and what might be the best approach to this.

I think what you are suggesting - giving the first four numbers - is entirely reasonable. One high street and on-line retailer I use does exactly what you are suggesting.. The first four numbers are usually sufficient to date/type the lens.

It is also entirely reasonable of the purchaser to ask for serial number info. I would always do so.

Give the number and be done with it. Nothing to fear unless you own a stolen body or lens that appears on a "stolen Leica" list. If you bought from a dealer this is quite unlikely. If you bought from a private person you'll never know until you try to resell.

The first 3 or 4 digits are always good to display online when selling.......

With some highly collectible cameras like the Leica IIIC K having the complete serial numbers are very very important when buying, if it's just a normal M Leica and a non collectible, 3 or 4 digits are enough......
