Camera Raw 5.5 Update

thank goodness, I can stop piddling around in Olympus Master whatever which crashes every couple minutes and is painfully slow even on my quad core computer. Now for ACDEESEE or whatever its called to update PRO 2 so I can view the raw files in their native format.

First thing when I get back home is try out how the EP1 files stand up in camera raw and though its just a release candidate not a final version, its better then next to nothing!

Yes, very bad for us Elements users. I am thinking of upgrading to CS4 though. Olympus Master has not impressed me in the least.

Since you already have PS Elements you may want to take advantage of the 30 trail downloads for both CS4 and Adobe Lightroom (LR should be upgrade to 2.5 (ACR 5.5) within the next few days/weeks as Adobe usually release the ACR update to both programs fairly close to each other) To see which program better meets your need before upgrading. Note LR is database metadata editor rather then a pixel editor so rather then editing an image it just overlays instructions that are incorporated when the images is exported (Printing/Web) or open/edited in PS/Elements when or if necessary.

Just to make things more interesting, word is CS5 is right around the corner, I have barely figured out what this whole graphics card integration in CS4 is and here comes the new one. Maybe the next update of camera raw wont support CS4 anymore either haha.....technology sucks.....

For us, Elements users, the new DNG converter 5.5 beta works fine. It's just an extra step, converting the Olympus Raw Files to DNG and then opening the DNG files in ACR 5.4.

I am willing to buy beer for anyone who is willing to sit with my MacBook (and me) to get us in sync regarding all of this.

Now for my genius.....

We can sit in a coffee shop and get free WiFi interent access.

How much better would the world be if we could have that at a bar?

While mindful of the rhetorical nature of the question, I'll take that literally and answer, simply, "lots!".

I dont know if any of you have been trying out this new camera raw but I have found when editing my EP1 raw pictures in Olympus Master 2 and camera raw there is a pretty big difference in the image quality. Specifically the lack of "pitting" and noise removal artifacts in the image when converting with camera raw. Great stuff.

The artifacts and gritty noise is common with all Olympus cameras and using Master 2. The reason some people stick with it is the 'Olympus colour' that Master maintains during RAW conversion. But I think ACR is now well up to the task.

Thansk a lot. I have been shooting jpg these days.

btw. cs4 is much faster than previous versions (except ps 7.0).

So now if I want to get the EP-1, I have to pay for another upgrade to CS4?

Right. And worse than having to pay, you have to upgrade, and can't even buy a new CR to run with your old CS3 if you want to. That is the reason why I have decided to get out of the new digital camera rat race for good. Each update to PS so far meant a prolonged period of reduced productivity, as they always manage to break ("improve") something in the handling. I simply don't have the time to blow a month each year on re-training my muscle memory to a new piece of software that does exactly the same thing as the old one, only with the menus garbled and everything displaced by a mouse width.

FYI: Adobe is offering an Element to CS4 upgrade for $299, through Sept 15th

If you're interested send me your email via PM and I'll forward you the email from Adobe.
