Just some thoughts of what street means to ME:
"Street" does not mean random, off-kilter, grainy, out-of-focus shots without an apparent subject, that you have to look at for 15 minutes to "get."
"Street" does not mean wide shots of homeless people, or other normal people just going about their everyday boring business.
"Street" does not mean the day, the hour, the moment when...nothing happens.
"Street" is all about the day, the hour, the moment when something DOES happen, and you are ready, prepared, and quick enough (or thoughtful enough) to see it, process it in your mind, and snap the shutter.
My mentor told me of "feeling" when the picture was about to happen, rather than seeing it. To have "soft eyes," as he put it. Too many times "Street" is trying to hard to make something there that is not there. I might have a roll of film loaded into my Canon VI-L for a month, and only take 5 pictures.
"Street" is about patience, seeing whether it really IS a photo, knowing your camera so well that it is an extension of you.
Rules are meant to be broken, though, and that is when art is made.
