In order to really get back to basics, I could start mining my own silver for emulsions, then raising and slaughtering my own livestock to create the film gelatin.
I understand from Niepce's experiments that Bitumen of Judea can be exposed to light in a camera obscura. After about eight hours, the light will harden portions of the Bitumen. The softer "unexposed" Bitumen can then be washed away with lavender oil, resulting in a permanent image. Must try this some time.
