>>Not only can I see in negative, I can also take light readings by sight, count Mississippis to time developer and check the temperature with my pinkie stuck in the top of the tank!!<<
Sparrow rocks! Also, try using film-cannisters to measure out portions of developer.
In order to really get back to basics, I could start mining my own silver for emulsions, then raising and slaughtering my own livestock to create the film gelatin.
I understand from Niepce's experiments that Bitumen of Judea can be exposed to light in a camera obscura. After about eight hours, the light will harden portions of the Bitumen. The softer "unexposed" Bitumen can then be washed away with lavender oil, resulting in a permanent image. Must try this some time.

I was joking, Socratic irony, sorry; however gum Arabic works way better than bitumen, and being clear it allows you to do colour, also you can use water as a clearing agent

I caught the irony! However, it did remind me of my misspent youth, when I counted "one-thousand-one ... one-thousand-two" when timing prints under the enlarger.
Gum Arabic sounds interesting.

Gum Arabic mixed with gouache (watercolour and honey) exposed to UV becomes waterproof, I’ve wasted many hours on it for years
