I remember when all you needed to get into Canada was a valid driver's license...

It's still enough to get into Canada... it's getting back into the US that's the problem.

Where are we going?
How about Hans Island? We could do our bit in claiming it for Canada. Should only cost about $50,000 each to get there.
And adventure ... it's described as a tiny speck of windswept limestone midway between Canada and Greenland.

hmm...

Somewhere just west of here... perhaps.. umm... Guelph? We can tour Sleeman's Brewery before the Japanese come in and take it over :D

Hmm.. Ooooooo Kitchener/Waterloo for Oktoberfest!.. heheh.. :D

Brick Brewery is in Waterloo as well!! :D

I'd say Sault but it is far enough east to not be considered by Edmontonians and those from Lotus Land. Advantages: Small enough to have cheap lodging, but big enough to have good watering holes and even decent grub. Plus, it's by the largest fresh water hole in the world, and tons of great photo subjects. Good camping spots for those who prefer to tent or RV it. In between Sault and Kenora are other locales that offer the same respite from the urban world, though only Thunder Bay is as large as Sault.

Winnipeg-ish would be fine with me, but for all these locales, August long weekend or near thereafer; anything in Spring or Summer before that meets we'd have to bring a tanker full of Deet just to be on the safe side.

Seriously, my holidays next summer will be Superior north, mostly camping in Pukaskwa National Park, so I'd be there anyway. But I'm also up for other options.

Gene: I thought Port Credit was now centre of the universe? At least until the Leafs start their season at the ACC.

Ah heck, if we're going to make a real adventure out of this, let's convene in Vancouver! Neat city!

Or Montreal, another neat city!

Gene

[edit] Earl, the ACC will never really replace Maple Leaf Gardens as the virtual centre...

Dave: You're always thinkin'! How about Creemore? Best in my book unless you want darker ale or bitter, in which case it's off to Guelph for Wellington County.

I would like to express my full endorsement for Dave's approach to choosing a location. :D

Montreal or Quebec City are both excellent. Montreal I could manage in a fairly easy drive. For Quebec City, I might simply change my vacation plans.

I could do Montreal.. I may even be able to crash at someone's place and we could always venture to the Unibroue brewery outside of Montreal - Home of Maudite, La Fin Du Monde, Blanche De Chambly and a host of other fine belgian style beers :D

Dave

Hey, isn't Marc Jutras in Montreal? I bet he could hook us up with some interesting photo opps.

None of us will be in any condition to leave Montreal. :D

hehe... La Fin Du Monde does the trick as well... only faster :D

I believe Frank is correct re Marc.
I bet we could try to get Merciful out from Halifax as well if it was in Montreal.

Joe.. do you think you could do this?

It's Toronto, isn't it? :)

We should find out where everyone who's interested in this idea lives.

Rather than the geographic center, we should determine the man-miles center.
To illustrate this concept, suppose there were 10 members located in Toronto and just 1 in Edmonton. The geographic center would be somewhere in Manitoba. However, the 10 members from TO would each travel the same amount of miles as the one from ED. If it were located in, or closer to TO, the total number of miles travelled would be MUCH less. Capeesch? Perhaps to avoid the travel expense, TO members could help subsidise the travel of a few far-off members to TO.

do you have a phd in math, my mind is numb just trying to follow the permutations

Thanks for suggesting the Soo, Trius. I wouldn't have to travel to go to this meeting.

The Soo offers a great opportunity for nature photography, especially on the unspoiled coast of Lake Superior heading North toward Wawa. Personally, I'm a city boy and I get turned off by the black flies and the possibility of encountering bears. The city itself is not really that different from most other cities up North. If considering meeting up in the winter, the Bon Soo winter carnival is quite an attraction and the winter landscape in the country is breath-taking. At least there are no black flies then and the bears are in hibernation. We have a brewery too (Northern Breweries) but it looks rather plain and uncharismatic compared to the small breweries in Southern Ontario.... and it kind of smells like... well lets say the beer is often called 'Wolf Piss' locally.

Here's a movie of the Lake Superior shore near the Soo.

Montreal and Quebec City are the most beautiful towns that I've visited in Canada so far. Still haven't gone out to the Maritimes though. I feel that there is a profound sense of history there that I don't feel anywhere else from west of Quebec, except for maybe Ottawa.

Before Northern was bought or reorganized, I thought Superior Ale was pretty decent for a non-craft brew. I have a Norhtern Brewery jacket that I purchased from the brewery store about 1998.

I'll bring extra Deet for you, Nando, not to worry. And if Dave comes, he'll just lower his head and the reflection will blind the bears.
