canon 35/2.8 and filters.

I just looked at the depth and dimensions (angles) of the Canon hood for the 35/2.8, and I do not think a filter will cause any vignetting.

I forget, do you have the 34mm or 40mm filter ring 35/2.8. I have the older 34mm and have not used a hood because it seems so deep, I suspect it may vignette. I have not heard anyone mention though that it does. That said, I have been careful with the light, and have had no problem using the lens without a hood.

it is somewhat problematic in Israel(very contrasty light, and sun in your face We sometimes use the sunny 22 rule here).

So there's a general agreement about the 34mm filter not vignetting the lens?

Chris:

I've got the same lens and am buying a 34 to 49 step-up ring for it. Would you mind telling me the depth and dimensions (angles) of the OEM Canon hood so I don't have any problems w/ an aftermarket hood?

Many thanks,
Bill

Most of my other lenses have 39mm filter size so I use a SOOGZ with 39mm and the 35/50mm Leica hood also on this tiny Canon 35mm. It does vignette, especially wide open, but the hood is usually for outdoors and that is rarely wideopen. Then the vignetting is not that much.
Only using the SOOGZ doesn't vignette, but with a filter it does.
Only a 34mm filter doesn't vignette.
Would like to know what the original hood is like though...

Bill, the hood has an internal diameter of 55mm at the lip, and stands 22mm proud of the front of the lens when screwed into place.

So this is a stepping ring 34-40mm and a screw-in hood that can take a series VI filter (IIRC)? I had a similar hood but it made the little lens so bulky.

The hood pictured has a 40mm Series VI adapter that fits on the 50/1.8 which has a 40mm filter thread. I imagine that Canon also made a Series VI adapter that screwed into the 34mm filter thread on the lens and received the Series VI hood.

I think the Series VI hoods had a common thread on the base. I have two; the Canon hood pictured and also a Kenco ventilated hood which suits 50 and 35 and is very similar to the Canon. I know that Tiffen and Ednalite (amongst others) made the Series VI adapters. I have one for 34mm (Ednalite 615) and also a Tiffen #624 that fits the 39mm Leica filter rings, both in black.

So CHris, that Tiffen 624 is like a 34-39 stepping ring?
I want that one!

No, sorry, I did not explain it very well. The Tiffen 624 is more like a 39-43mm (roughly 43mm) stepping ring. It allows me to use the Series VI hood on a Leice lens with 39mm filter thread.

The Ednalite 615 is like a 34-43mm (roughly 43mm) stepping ring. It allows me to use the Series VI hood with any lens that takes 34mm filters.

Series VI filters don't have a thread at all - they are sandwiched between the adapter and the hood when they are screwed together.

I just did a quick ebay search for 34-39: I think that will be difficult! I did see 34-37 and 34-52.

Yup - I have the Series IV 34mm adaptor. There is also a Series IV Adapter Ring Insert to allow a filter to be housed in an adaptor ring without the hood.
