Canon LTM Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM

Canon M39 M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
Since the price of good J-3 samples seems to have sky rocketed, I'm looking for one of these.

All the images on flickr make this lens look even better than the Summilux!!
 
I sold/traded off my Canon 50/1.4 and Canon 100/2. Both lenses are superb, both I have no regrets. It was time to move on and to explore different looks with different lenses.
 
I certainly did like the IQ from my 50mm/1.4 but I didn't like the large size and weight and particularly the loooong focus throw. So I sold it and bought the much smaller and lighter 50mm/1.8 instead. I'm happy now.
 
The close focus on the Canon 50/1.4 is 3.5ft. On the M8, not too bad with the crop factor. On my film cameras, i prefer a closer focus.
 
Honestly, I didn't realize anyone was interested in this lens, I just happen to keep it because it's a great lens, but I got rid of the Canon body.

Love the 50 f1.4 for its compactness and the 50 f1.2 for the extra stop. Both seems to have no focusing issue.

1.2 is an extra half stop.
 
1.4 to a 1.2 is only half a stop. That's not enough to justify it to me. i'd stick with a 1.4 as long as it looks as good, but I must say, as was mentioned with that comparison, the 1.2 does not have as much yellow in the rendering, and that was nice.
 
it took me a while to find a 1.4 for myself. I'd picked up a few while i was still in japan on "commision" for RFF members elsewhere, and after seeing a few good copies decided i needed one for myself.
I love this lens, i think it's prob the best value 50mm for LTM/M mount. I only enjoy it that much more after removing the infinity lock screw. I HATE those locks!

There appears to be something about this lens, especially in b&w which is wonderful for portraits, but I am not sure what it is. It seems to have a capacity to "see" as we see rather than seeing by being "sharp."

If Helen Hill bought the 50/1.4 there must be something special about it. Is there anyplace to see a three comparison Canon 50/1.4, 50/1.8 and CV Nokton 50/1.5 for LTM?
 
same here, a bit surprised about the findings of too little sharpness. Sure there are sharper 1.4/50 lenses out there, but the Canon LTM certainly looks sharp enough for me. Condition of copy / copy variation could be at play here.

Helen, the picture of the three Flappers, if it wasn’t taken at F1.4, it was definitely taken between F1.4 and F2.0. On Efke 25 film. I do add a bit of sharpening when I scan with my Nikon V Coolscan, but nothing excessive. I prefer this lens to my 50mm Summicron. Just a nice optic.

Looks like focus is on the bench closer to the camera than on the woman or the pigeon.

Are you sure it is focusing accurately? My 50/1.4 is quite sharp wide open, if I nail focus.
 
A very good lens, easier to use than a Sonnar (and the 1,5/5cm Canon which is a Sonnar formula).
But too big for my LTM Leica bodies. So, I had to resell it.

I tried the Canon 50mm f1.4 but found that it didn't handle well on the small body of the "Barnack" camera's.
I much prefer the size, handling and results from the Nikkor 5cm f1.4 on my Leica II.
I took Roland's (ferider's) recommendation (some years ago) for the Nikkor 5cm f1.4 and find that it is "in my opinion"
THE best fast standard lens with it's small size,weight and great versatility which suits any camera and especially so
when used on the small "Barnack"camera's.
If however you still prefer Canon then the 50mm f1.5 Canon (Sonnar) is an excellent lens and is much smaller than the f1.4 (Planar).
