Canon G9: a point and shoot equivalent to a leica M?

yes, for what it is and what it costs and the quality of photos it can take, I have no complaints about the G9.

They really need to change the forums so that big images don't break the tables. Either that or make a rule that images over 1000 px wide must be linked instead of inlined.

Funny thing is that I can never upload a picture wider than 800 pixels. I get an upload violation if I try. How do other people do it?

Turn the top dial to video and use the wheel on the back to scroll to time lapse.

I have both the M8 and the G9. In their class, both are excellent cameras, and I use them equally. Having said that, the M8 offers superior shot quality assuming you have some decent glass, experience with the camera and like the rangefinder experience. While not a simple P&S per-se, the G9 is a "fun camera" when compared to the M8 and is great for quality (RAW) quick shots with a decent lens and add-ons (shoe for flash, wide angle, even under-water housing). If I have "the shot", or traveling somewhere especially good to shoot (NYC, Paris), it's M8 all the way. But for catching the kids playing, running around town and having a high quality quick shots, the G9 is a wonderful camera. Assuming you've dropped $5 to $6K on the M8, the G9 is an extra $450.00 to have handy and a great value when the M8 is too much metal to carry.

For big prints (A3), I would only recommend the M8, but for 8x10 or smaller, the G9 holds it's own in this contest... but the M8 is the better camera and should be for the delta in price.

The station is St Pancras in London. The camera is a Sigma DP1. I don't normally post pics that big, but just wanted to show the detail a P&S can pull these days. BTW and IMHO big pictures aren't bad, quoting pictures time and time again is worse 🙂

Sigma DP1...is that with the CMOS sensor? The detail is superb, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come with p&s digitals. I'd love to have a good CMOS sensor in my compact.

Its the fovean sensor. Exactly the same sensor as Sigma uses in the SD14 DSLR useable up to ISO800.

I have seen no need to replace my G5 with a G9 because the two features I really need (f/2 lens and swivel LCD screen), are missing on the G9.
