Sorry, Adam, customs confiscated the schnitzel I brought back for you....
Thanks for the comment. This lens does really well w/ color (and not too shabby w/ b&w either).

Everyone here can benefit from a description on how you identify distortion (in the posted images).

Thanks, Marcelo. I like the intimacy of your portrait. The oof areas are typical of this lens - painterly, no swirly bokeh.

Hi Raid
I'm not sure the question was addressed to me so I'll answer it
I don't see any distortion in the shots.
The lens could show distortion at closer ranges where the problem is usually more pronounced, but from what we see here, it's at worse a good lens in that regard, and it may well be almost distortion free.
[edit]: I see now how my former post says exactly the contrary of what I meant. Sorry for that...

I was misled by your original comment, Michael. So you meant that there is no visible distortion.

I regret selling mine so much now... I've been looking for a good, cheap, chrome 50 for my M8... if I kept my 50/1.8, I wouldn't have this problem now

I just bought a chrome version. At first I wasn't going to buy it as I thought I had enough 50's, but then I looked properly at the images I took with it in the shop. I was surprised at how sharp it was wide-open, and how nice the out of focus areas were. I'm now taking a slew of photos with it and I'll be posting some in due course. It doesn't have the same well-damped feeling of a modern lens but it is very nice, all the same.

This is a very nice lens, but unfortunately there is a great tendency for fog on the internal elements adjacent to the aperture. Even more unfortunately, whatever it is that outgasses or creeps away from the aperture seems to be corrosive, and may rot the lens coating. So it's a great lens, but check it carefully, and be suspicious of interior fog- sometimes you can't clear it.
Cheers,
Dez

Dez, I thought that was only some of the later lenses, the black ones. I didn't think that early chrome ones had any problem with outgassing and haze.

Yes, it certainly is more common in the later ones, but i did encounter one early chrome one with a ruined inner element. Maybe that was just some overenthusiastic cleaning on the part of some earlier owner.
It's interesting seeing the differences in how the different makers' lenses have aged. Leitz ones seem to fall prey to element separation and cleaning marks, Zeiss ones seem to have the black paint flake off the edges of the inner elements, Canon ones sometimes have this haze problem, and Nikon ones are totally indestructable. Maybe it's partly that the Nikon optics can be newer than the others, but they certainly seem to have gotten the coating and lubrication decisions right!

Should be a ton of snow on the ground at this time of year, but we've had a really light winter as far a precipitation goes.

Just got this lens attatched to a Bessa R in decent shape for $350. After scrolling through this thread I'm even more anxious to get my first color roll back. Processing some B&W tonight and will likely post results tomorrow. Excited!

B&H are showing a Canon 50mm f1.8 collapsible lens in their used stock but with no image.
Seems like a good price so what do you guys reckon, worth a gamble?
I actually didn't think there was a collapsible f1.8?
