And the Canon 50/1.8 is no slouch when it comes to black and white, either:

The Canon 50/1.8 LTM comes in many versions/types. Have any of you noticed any differences in image quality between types? I'm particularly interested in differences between 10 or 11 aperture blade 50/1.8's and the newer 8 aperture blade 50/1.8's. Wouldn't the bokeh have small differences?

My Canon 50/1.8 LTM lens is a later silver model with black rubber grip.
I detect none of the famous Canon haze.
Either I got lucky or a previous owner did a nice job cleaning it.
BTW I am looking for a 40mm yellow-green filter to fit this lens.
Please PM if you have one for sale.
TIA,
Chris

I currently own the type I and truly enjoy it's performance, but just got a deal on the type IV which is a measly ~180g compared the the ~270g of the type I. I'm psyched for it's arrival. I will probably be posting my type I in the classifieds soon since I won't be needing it any longer.

Time to bump this thread, particularly in view of Roland's comparison of fast Canon RF lenses including the 50/1.8, here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155193

Anyone have a production date for this type 1?

according to the Cameramuseum site the 1.8/50 "chrome" or "Ver.1" was sold from starting November 1951: http://global.canon/en/c-museum/product/s18.html
according to the more detailed information in Peter Kitchingman's book on Canon rangefinder lenses your's is a "Type 4", these have serial numbers 88596 to 170760 and were produced between 4/1953 and 3/1956. That would make 1955 the most probable year of production of your lens

$99 +11$ fast shipping 50 1.8 LTM just arrived from Japan. On focus test target it is front focusing about 5 cm if wide open, but in real world stations it is surprisingly not so critical.
On M-E.
At f8 I could read all of the info on the dog's tag.
f2.8.
f1.8
Looking forward to test it on M3 ELC.

I bought a Canon IIIa rangefinder camera that had a Type 1 50mm f/1.8 Serenar attached to it for $250 back in 2009. I felt I was paying close to "top of the market" for the camera and lens back then, until I researched just what the lens sold for. Even back in 2009, it went for a pretty good chunk of change. And I soon began to appreciate why.
Here's a pic of a couple of acorns I took with this lens. The camera was an EOS DSLR and I was using just a simple M39 to EOS adapter for this image. I was maybe 8 or 10 inches away from the acorns when I took the shot. The Serenar was stopped down to f/8. See that brown spot on the closest acorn?
Here's a 100% crop of the above image showing that "spot."
And a few B&W images. Film was some old, expired Plus-X Pan, developed in D-76.

I'm interested that you have an m39 to EOS adapter. I understood that the m39/LTM lens mount was not compatible with EOS - is that incorrect? I often wished that I could use my Canon 50mm f/1.8 LTM (and other LTM lenses) on EOS mount.
