When I press the shutter and advance the frame, the shutter curtain does not always shut all the way and I am left with a light leak. Can this be fixed with a CLA or is my Canon P hosed? Also the range finder is misaligned but I'm sure that can be fixed. Any suggestions on who to send it to?

Thx,

Carlos

Almost certainly fixable by any competent repairer, as a straight repair with the full CLA as a relatively modest add-on: a good repairer will muck out and clean up as a matter of course. This leaves depressingly great scope for those who can't or won't fix it. Look out for an older repairer, more experienced on mechanical cameras.

Cheers,

R.

I have a Canon P that was serviced by Eddy Smolov. I can say he did a very good job cleaning and tuning up the camera. I was surprised how much he cleaned up the camera as well. It went in a bit scratched and dull, when it came back I almost thought he sent the wrong camera back, it was exceptionally clean.

I sent it in with a number of cameras but his service fee was very reasonable.

Thanks for the tip. Do you have Eddy Smolov's contact information? I would be interested in finding out more about his services.

While I never used Eddy, I've never heard anything but positive things about him or his work. They say if it can be fixed, he will fix it.

I had Mark Hama work on a Yashica TLR for me a few years ago. He did a great job cleaning up and fixing the camera. He can be a bit tricky to get a hold of sometimes. I just about gave up communicating via email, everything got easier when I used the phone instead.

Mark Hama did a CLA on my P, and I had to send it back to him to get it right (he finally did). Hard to get in touch w/, as mentioned above, and he had the camera for over 5 mos. I know others have had good experiences w/ him, but there were just too many issues, so I'd send to Don Goldberg if it were me.

Just wondering if Mark Hama is trying to get away from repairs lately. When he did my Canon P, the shutter jammed at the first roll and I did need to send it back for a free fix (it wasn't the original problem, but just had a CLA) and fixed it was. Took about three weeks the second time. He did a good job, though. Same with Youix Ye who fixed my Leica, needed to be sent back for a free fix, but he was much faster.

But in all honesty, I'm just glad these guys are willing to take on the task!
