You put Mao in the same class with all the other "bloody aggressor army officers"? I don't think so. Mao is in the same class as Hitler and Stalin. they are in a very "elite" group of animals--not humans. The most despicable our modern world has experienced. May they rest in a special place in hell for eternity.

I don't quite understand your logic. The Japanese officers who ordered to killed many thousands including women and childern in Nanjing was not in the same class so that the camera he used has no problem? What if the prime minister by any chance used one of the Nikons? I don't remember his name, but I think he also deserves a special place in history. I am not defending any "animals", they will be judged by history. Let us not get involved in politics. I have absolutely no interest in politics so that you can find a better place to discuss these issues with others.

BTW, Red Flag 20 was not made for Mao and his wife only. Many Chinese journalists used them.

Someone (hope was his web name) made a very capable digi-back with a Chinese digital P/S, and shot a moon image that is even sharper than my Canon 300D plus a MTO 1000A.:bang:

This is a Chinese high speed 16mm cine camera. Only some 60 cameras were made until recently.
I is also much less often seen than the 16mm Red Flag and 35mm Heping (peace) cine cameras.

I found a book that listed Chinese cine equipment. There are 11 types of 35mm movie cameras and 4 types of 16mm movie cameras. This SX16K was made by Linxia Sine Equipement Research Institute. It shoots at 6-144 frames/second, and is powered by a 27V battery. At 6-48 frames, the stability is within 0.01mm, and at 48-120 frames, it is within 0.02mm. I don't know much about movie cameras, but it looks like a high quality camera.🙂

China also made 18 models of 35mm and 19 models of 16mm projection cameras plus many 8.75mm projection cameas, accesary lenses and related equipments. This area of Chinese optical industry was never mentioned before.

I wonder where on earth he found so many rare, expensive items?:bang: The brand name for the Hasselblad copy is Dong Feng (east wind). Only some 90 cameras were made IIRC.

I would like to sell a few "rare" birds to him if he could even pay half of the selling price.😀 No, on a second thought,I would rather keep them as an investment.

Two 35mm movie cameras are worth mentioning.

A GSS-35 made by Gangsu Optical Instruments factory. Arris mount, shoots at 50-300 frames/ second, powered by 220V AC motor at 10,000 r/minute. Weights 38 KGs.

SKK 35-120 X ray high speed 35mm movie camera made by Linxia Research Institute. Special fixed prime lens 57mm F 1:0.85, shoots at 12-120 frames/second, and the frame stability at 120 frames/second is within 0.012mm. Weight 7 KGs. This one looks like another high quality camera, but I have no images of both cameras. I wonder what the 57mm F1:0.85 lens looks like?:bang:

for the Japanese Imperial Army in WW2. There were some models built exclusively for the Army or the Navy. One or several may have been aboard those battle ships which bombed Pearl Harbour. Perhaps many others were in use by the invading hordes as they occupied, pillaged, and murdered thousands in China, Manchuria, Malaya, and the Philippines. Doesn't this make you think twice about Canons? What if the Japanese war PM Tojo was seen shooting with one (in those times he wasn't doing the same with a gun???).

Thanks for your comments. I basically share the same opinion with you. When we look back in 100-200 years, the picture will be clearer. China has gone a long way since she was a backward, oppressed, hopeless, invaded country. Now she has a better chance to become a great country again.
I feel that those African and Arabic countries may wish to have such a leader.

I don't think Mao was ever interested in something like cameras and watches so a Red Flag 20 has little to do with Mao. It is only an interesting and unique Chinese photographic product, and not the best quality one from what I heard. However, I am surprised that China made so many other good quality photographic products that I have never heard of before until recently, such as the 1000mm F8 mirror lens, those movie cameras, sine optics, etc.🙂

To put it coldly, they would of course score badly. But in what way would that excuse Mao's genocide? Also, backward feudal attitudes? Mao made himself into, in basically every respect except title, another emperor of China, and the one who killed most people at that. Even with the disclaimer you qouted - no, there are no exact numbers, and it could perhaps be 20,000,000. Does it really make Mao any better if he "only" killed 20 million, instead of 40? This is millions of people we are talking about. Whatever one does with the numbers, fact remains that he was responsible for the death of at least about as many as Hitler and Stalin combined, and most likely even more.

Lastly, and to keep it somewhat on topic: Your survival-site has been of much use to me on several occasions - a great resource.

I will not base my judgement on guessed numbers or any assumptions. Why some disasters happened during Mao's time is still not very clear to me. Was all the human life cost necessay? I don't think so. Should Mao be the only person who is responsible for all this? I am not sure. At least , now I believe China is on the right track. I could also easily assume that without Mao, China could have remained a hopeless country with more deaths and still no chance for any progress, or with a greater leader, China could be better off. Those political issues are so complicated, and that is why I am not interested in discussing them. Let's drop the topic for good. We can keep those opinions to our own,and let histroy make the final judgement.

This is a Russian rangefinder cameras site, so if anyone wish to know the difference between a Contax II and Kiev 2, let us find out! I can tell you that a 50 years old Kiev 2 in good condition is better than a 70 years old Contax II in worn condition. This is so much easier.:bang:

Hi,

I found this image of the very 1st Panda 135mm SLR made in 1973 with a s/n of 730001! There were only about 1,000 cameas with a panda image engraved. The owner offered to sell it for about $1,100(RMB 8,800), but quickly withdrew the offer. There were only about 7,000 Panda SLR cameras made briefly by Harbin Eletric Meters Factory(!) before it changed name to Peafowl. Is Peafowl a better translation than Peacock for that beautiful bird?😎
The early Panda has provision for a motor drive, but I never saw one for sale. It also has a mirror lock-up.
