There are some very nice people posting here who obviously know what they are talking about, but when I try to find some uploaded photo's there is nothing, no blog, no homepage and most important of all, no RFF gallery 😱 . Come on, post some of your work and put your photos where your mouth is!! 😛

I agree. Whenever anyone posts something contentious, I check out their RFF gallery to see if they can demonstrate that they know what they are talking about. If I don't see any photos, they don't have much credibility with me. All talk, no walk.

I've got in my sig a link to my main gallery and to my portfolio, though there are RF-made photos, I don't think they're matching with the quality we can see here on RFF. So I'll keep quiet and modest for now 😉

There also the opposite thing happening, and we're lucky to have a silent member who OTH features my all time favorite RFF gallery 🙂 It isn't difficult to know who.

Darkavenger, and anyone else who took my post the wrong way, do NOT keep quiet. Modesty however, is another issue, that everyone Including myself, needs to practise.

Good point, Oscar. There are actually several fine photographers who post photos in the Gallery and make comments there, but rarely take part in the discussion forums.

Your asking the new people to post photos and when we do they seem to go unrecognized. We post here looking for comments or critiques, and critiques mean bad as well as good and we get nothing we seem to go un-noticed as if we are disturbing a clique. How about a hello!!! gret shot, Stinks…try it again…something!!! :bang:

Jaap: Did Ansel Adams really say that in 1983?

There was not much digital around in those days! I started in 1981, but we made our own and it recorded to 28-Track reel-to-reel digital tape.

I just clicked on "my Gallery". No wonder everyone wants a 50mm F1.5 lens.

Yes he did. I forgot the name of the photog he said this to but I will post it tomorrow (if I remember to look it up tonight)

You are right there. There should be far more comments. It must be the masochist in me, but I really do appreciate getting critic on my photo's (but not too much- and the occasional pat on the head please 😀 )

As well as I can recall, every new member's post of introduction has been answered with many welcoming responses. Responding to photos posted is another story. Few people have enough time to do this for every photo. It would be all right to specifically ask for opinions on a specific photo. The main reason that this is so is because many people use the RFF merely as a snapshot album, and there are too many photos to sift through to determine which are posted as a "best effort" and which are simply posted as one would post snaps in a photo album. If I get involved with someone in a thread, discussing an issue, I will check them out to see if they have a gallery posted, to see where they are coming from.

One idea would be to have a time-limit in the "rate my photograph" gallery. If a photo were to be removed after, say, one month it would not be so unwieldy. Then it would be an incentive to browse the galleriesof the photographers whose work caught your eye.
Btw, did you notice that Patman doesn't have a link to a gallery....

I think that, beyond modesty, there may be some legitimate reasons for not setting up galleries, the biggest being fears of copyright infringement and work floating around the net. I'm not sure I'm too fond of the "Print View" or "Send as Postcard" options I've seen attached to all photos. Granted, any resulting use would be pretty low resolution, but still, it's possible.

In any event, I plan to establish a gallery as soon as I get to the darkroom and print some images from a rangefinder; most of my present work was taken with a Rolleicord.

Patman: As another new member, I find this a welcoming and friendly environment. And I like that each time I visit there are different shots displayed, so that eventually everyone's work will be seen. If you really want a critique, maybe you could post a thread with links to your gallery and describe what you want people to respond to (subject matter, tone, compostition, etc.).

No scanner of my own, limited access to the one I can get my mitts on, a complete frustration with the post-scanning process, and no photogeeks in my circle to volunteer to do it for me.

Scanners weren't even on the radar when I got into photography. Hell, I still have enamelled wash pans and nickel-plated squeegee plates.

jaapv, your admonition is obviously not addressed to lurkers likes me, but let me interject that, from this beginner's perspective, there is enough quantity and quality in the RFF gallery to be intimidating.

The other thing is, I visit RFF to eavesdrop and learn: about darkroom technique, about buying, repairing and shooting cameras and lenses, about special shooting situations, etc. I also visit to enjoy the way people talk about something they love. I've learned and enjoyed plenty, but I am embarrassed to say I haven't had much time to stop and look at the pictures!

I guess my point is that I imagine some long-time members may prefer to spend their time here communing verbally, whether trading info or just shooting the breeze. I wouldn't have it any other way, as I have certainly benefitted from their loquaciousness.

On the other hand, you have made me visit the gallery. Not for the first time, but it has been a while. I do forget it's there sometimes. So thanks, jaapv, for reminding me that there are other things going on at RFF to enjoy, and in a way reminding me what this is all about in the first place.

And while I'm at it, a big Thank You to Jorge and the regulars for... well, for all this!

I think its great if people wish to post their pictures and even better if they have a nice website. However its not that important to me to look at everyones pictures so I can judge them. Does it mean you dont know what you are talking about because you dont have a website? No. There are a host of good reasons one might choose to not post pictures, this sight for me is about cameras and not judging others work or having a superiority complex. I know a couple guys who are the most technical photographers Ive ever been around and its just boreing to look at their subject matter, But I like to hang out with them and talk camera sometimes.

We have so many members now that if everyone would commit to commenting on a photo at least once or twice a week the comment rate would sky rocket. There's got to be one photo to have something to say about in a week's time.

That, btw, is a pledge I made to myself a while back --to comment at least once a week in the gallery. I haven't always stuck to it but I'm going to try harder.

For me, while I do link to my galleries in my sig, I don't use RFFs gallery specifically. I would have to post photos to apug, RFF, and photo.net if I were to start uploading to forum-specific spaces.
