BTW, I find it funny that you are arguing against the flat tax because it hurts the poor. What harms the poor the most is sales tax! Then there is property tax. That doesn't harm the poor that much because most cannot afford decent property. What that harms is the middle class. The rich, after all, have no problem in paying.
The poor pay property tax too, though usually they do it indirectly. Since most poorer people rent, they don't get a tax bill for the property, but the landlord does and he factors in the taxes as part of his costs of doing business, which influences the rent he asks for the house or apartment.
I agree with you on sales tax. The poor pay sales tax on almost 100% of their income, because they have to spend all their income (plus more!) to just survive. The rich invest most of their income and investments are not charged sales tax (at least in Indiana...don't know about other states).
