Congratulations to all Americans!

BTW, I find it funny that you are arguing against the flat tax because it hurts the poor. What harms the poor the most is sales tax! Then there is property tax. That doesn't harm the poor that much because most cannot afford decent property. What that harms is the middle class. The rich, after all, have no problem in paying.

The poor pay property tax too, though usually they do it indirectly. Since most poorer people rent, they don't get a tax bill for the property, but the landlord does and he factors in the taxes as part of his costs of doing business, which influences the rent he asks for the house or apartment.

I agree with you on sales tax. The poor pay sales tax on almost 100% of their income, because they have to spend all their income (plus more!) to just survive. The rich invest most of their income and investments are not charged sales tax (at least in Indiana...don't know about other states).

You're going to have to come up with a better slogan than "Vote for a flat tax because I'm crappy at math!"

The only people behind a flat tax are idiots to think everyone else is as dumb as they are. Give it up. Hire an accountant if you can't do your own taxes.

You mean the accountants that know all the tricks to avoid paying taxes? Because of all the loopholes you mean? The loopholes that primarily benefit the very wealthy? Especially in the US. Nice argument!

That's a very intellectual argument you've got there. Please post a reasonable opinion, please, without resorting to name calling...this post does not reach the quality standards established in this thread. :)

I did some research, and believe it or not, a modern politician tried to enact a poll tax! You wouldn't believe who tried: the beloved Thatcher. Who would have thought she would try to screw the populace?

Anyways, it didn't quite work out like she expected, and in fact, it brought about her downfall. You'd think the proles would have embraced such an utterly equal and fair form of taxation...

The Blessed Margaret? Unpopular? Riots?

No, you must have been misinformed.

Besides, if there were any rioters, and the pictures weren't specially staged, it was only a few people who were too stupid to realize that a flat tax is MUCH fairer and more socially acceptable than progressive taxation.

I mean, if money's a problem, you can always sell the holiday home in the Dordogne, or if you haven't got a holiday home in the Dordogne you can just give up eating one or two days a week. Come to think of it, that's a great idea. Many of the poor are too fat anyway.

Cheers,

R.

...

The problem for me is that I don't think our current (by "our" I mean most of the western world that has essentially the same taxation system) is fair at all. If you are poor you are totally screwed. The personal exemptions are far too low. In Canada the exemption is about $10,000. That is absolutely ridiculous. People that earn less than $20,000 should, in my opinion, pay neither consumption tax nor income tax. They need every dollar of that to live.

I photographed 'the blesssed Margaret' last year but she is just a shadow of her former self. The pointed tail had withered, the horns blunted and decayed the tongue shirivelled and discoloured and the red flaming eyes of the past dulled.
I think she was preparing to return to the depths of hades from whence she came and she was afraid.
It was difficult for me to contain my joy.

Nice. Joy at someone near death.

The tolerance of the left in full glory yet again.

Had I been alive at the time and a bomber pilot like my father (59 missions over nazi germany )I would have felt the same about 'Dear old Adolph'..... would you ?.
It would seem from your contentions that anybody more compassionate than Ghengis Khan or Vlad the Impaler is some sort of commie lefty.

Btw I spent 4 years as a member of the Royal Marines some of which was on 'active Service '.

Apart from bleeting about having to pay any tax at all what have you done for your country ?

Ha, ha, ha, ha!

Then Greece is the country for you! (But they are sending the bill on to the next generation. Like USA)

Look up this link: http://www.federalbudget.com/

The US Federal Budget could be split simply like this (2009 figures):

Defence 700 B $ (Afganistan & Iraq not included, - Why?)
Treasury 700 B $ (interest on your public debt - will be increasing wildly in the near future!)

Health 700 B $ (the new bill not included)

Social security 700 B $

'Others' 700 b $ (incl Dep. of Homeland Security Dep of Education that gets about the same etc etc)

How would you American guys cut speniding (or otherwise finance) to be able to pay down some of the Federal debt so that future generations of Americans can afford to live in USA (and don't have to emigrate to socialistic countries like France and Norway, God forbid).

That's no "yearly allowance" when you get a refund.

I think most people see it as a savings plan, lol.

I know it's not a freebee! And yes, they are using my money for much of the year in the process.

However, the tax refund is something that's nice to have, and it makes the tax system more palatable.

Now imagine how much b*tching there would be if there were no withholdings and everybody had to cough up the cash on April 15 of each year!

What is your point? That poor people should pay taxes?

Well, yes. Here in Norway the bottom limit of income is 12,333 US$. - You can't live off 12K per year here in Norway. A cup of coffee costs 5 US$. All income above that you have to pay tax of. Not much, but still.

But I am also of the opinion that 1)it is a right to have access to health care 2)a home and 3) a job. Many countries have this incorporated in their (new) constitutions. Like Spain and Russia. I am also of the opinion that it should be the damned duty of the ruling politicians to balance the budgets. Every year. That means that they have to set aside money in a fund for rainy days.
