Contax G to M

I'll certainly be posting my observations and sample images. I'm really excited! And AFAIK, the surgery is reversible. The mod uses the front part of the lens and replaces the bottom half with a custom helicoid. Kind of like those adapter for the older Contax RF lenses to M mount, though I suspect it's not so easy as a latch to separate the two parts. cheers

Any ideas when the firm concerned is going to start advertising this conversion? I wouldn't mind getting my 90mm done.

I too am very interested in this procedure. Please let us know if and when this is a product. Thanks!!!!

I had the pleasure to borrow a converted 45/f2 a few weeks ago. Ran one color and one B+W roll through my M6 Classic. The photos produced were as fine as I expected... same fabulous Zeiss glass.

What interested me was the action and handling of the lens. Overall it functioned well. If this were to be my lens, I would hope for a little more damping in the focus. I found that each time I changed the aperture, i had to check and re-check the focus.

Other than that little nitpick, and it's one that may not be an issue for other users, I feel the conversion is worth the money to be able to use my favorite G lenses on my favorite RF, the M6.

You can see a few sample shots in a flickr set here:

Thanks to Robert J for the loaner lens. If you're interested in more info, contact him directly. He's digitalintrigue round these parts.

please excuse my ignorance, and i certainly do not mean in any way to be disrespectful, but what rules would be violated for us who follow this to receive information valuable to us from the source of the information? again, please, no disrespect intended, i honestly just dont understand why information flow about such an intersting issue to so many is a bad thing?

Have either of you (Apophat and rbelyell) contacted Digitalintrigue directly? PM or email him. He'll get back to you.

I can't answer the question about violation of rules or whatnot.

Best,
Dan

I'd like to convert my Contax G lens, I'm hoping that Digitalintrigue will answer soon (I sent a PM to him) :)
I don't have Leica but Contax G adapters aren't so smooth... :(
...and I'd like a focus scale! :)

Just heard from DigitalIntrigue that the first batch is back on its way to the US from the Island of Lens Surgery. Hope to have it soon to report. And just bought a M3 to stick it on...complete with a close-focus mod to .7m. From good ole Brian Sweeney on GetDPI. Perfect!

FYI, I think the reason DigitalIntrigue isn't posting on this now is that he might be involved as the US dealer of this service, and thus as TOS likely state, he can't really continue in the thread without sponsoring...and that's probably a bit premature. The initial mods took a bit longer than I or Robert thought, but that might just be the birthing pangs of the new process. I'll report more when I have one in hand.

Mine arrived this morning. Initial impressions very good, just ran some film, had a few frames left as I got to the Post Office and opened the box there. Looking at the wet film focus seemed good ;)

Lens arrived in a fancy box, engravings are nice and crisp, helicoid very smooth and damped to my liking. Aperture clicks are maybe a bit less crisp than I remember the lens being? Got the old barrel & mount back too, so maybe this could be reversed if ever needed? Can't imagine I'd ever want to, but nice to have the parts back. The M VF is so vastly better than the G- I'm really looking forward to shooting this lens again!

Will take this out on the M9 this afternoon if the rain holds off.

I second that - this particular conversion looks great - seems like the whole body of the lens is new. How does it feel in use (focus friction, aperture ring ...)?
