could this be the end?

How do you think I feel Joe? The Aussie $ has just hit $1.09 US. That's the highest it's ever been since the float. I've just gotta buy something!

I was doing better until I stumbled across a BIN for a Canon P, 50mm 1.8, meter and bag for $100. The Canon needed some work but I've dealt with most of it. The 50mm was in great condition once it had a bit of lubrication.

Did I need another 50mm? Nope. But for that price I figured I'd give it a try and see if it bumped anything I was using currently.

Those are the deals that make it hard for me to ignore ebay/craigslist/etc. Great opportunities to try something out for nearly free.

I've been selling recently (and have a lot more to go), but I've enjoyed exploring fixed lens rangefinders to see what worked best for me ergonomically, etc.

Fortunately for my wallet, I'm too cheap and risk adverse when it comes to large purchases to buy an M. 😉

there's a 35mm Summicron v2 going for $1250 on my local craigslist. I'm really tempted. But I already have a 35mm Summarit and really for that .5 I'm not going to see any difference - but it's all in the name.

I look at the classified ads here daily. I go through the KEH catalog when it arrives. Then I realize that not only do I not need anything, I really do not want anything.

Cancel that. I think I just bought a Bessa L in the classifieds here. At least it was only $99. But, there is a method to my madness. I have a LTM CV 25mm lens & finder for sale locally. I am thinking if I add the Bessa body and jack up the price by $99 that it will sell as a combo quicker. (Amazing how we rationalize our purchases)

I keep vowing not to buy any more 50s, but it never lasts. There are just so many cool ones to try! Lately it's been LTM 50/2 collapsibles: Canon Serenar, Leica Summar and Summicron. :bang:

And that's not even the gear I'm really jonesing for, none of which will result in substantially better pictures.

I feel your pain, Joe.

Heh, I work for a telco that also sells internet and cable tv, and they like to package and offer them as bundles.
I reckon they would hire you at the blink of an eye 😀

Even though I have no money to spend on gear at the moment it doesn't stop me from looking in the classifieds constantly.

I think that black M4-P was the first thing I've seen recently that really made me think about selling something else to buy it. The reality is though that I have an M2 with the focal length frame lines I really only use in any rangefinder (35/50/90) and that pretty much sits in the cupboard gatheriing dust.

Crazy stuff to contemplate updating unnecessarilly to something with three extra framelines I'd likely never use ... but that's what gas is all about I guess!

It is the end of me buying Nikkor-PC 10.5cm F2.5's.

Have one in S-Mount, Leica Mount, F-Mount, and now CONTAX mount.

I also have several other 105 F2.5's in F-mount, but those are marked in millimeters.

I wish I was your favorite little brother or best friend or something like that...lol

I have no money and expect to have none. I look all the freaking time. I search through all the garage sales. I check thrift stores at least once a week. I even check Craigslist garage sales in places my brother and father live in case there is something I tell them they have to grab for me or I will just die.

Being an elitist helps a lot. The fact I will not touch most gear because I am not interested in mediocre stuff really dwindles down my ownership. I am hounding for a medium format planar TLR, so much so I am thinking I would trade away my Apollo F. I have considered the Fuji 690 a lot but the fact the Mamiya 7 has better lenses... I doubt I could bring myself to do it.

GAS GAS... no cure... and NAS is worst...

Well, times are getting terrible so .. I probably will start selling my stuff... I have been delaying it because it hurts...

i desperately want to buy something...i almost broke out the cc to buy that m4-p in the classifieds...

i just cannot fathom being done...

i know...sell it all and then buy an m8.2 and the zeiss 35/2.8...what a simple set up, nirvana, image making in it's purist digital form.

right now i really don't need anything, 2 rd1s and lenses from 15 to 75...a 'normal' lens that i love...

and yet, i scour the classifieds hoping to find that one item that i just have to possess.

i need help...😱

You're not alone ... I do exactly the same thing ...

Let me help you: be grateful that you "limit" yourself to the smaller film formats.

I'm into large format photography with field cameras these days : I bought a Tojo 8x10 some time ago, just sold my Shen Hao 4x5 because it was "too small a format" (I know, I'm sick 😀), and bought a Shen Hao 5x7 with 4x5 reducing back, so I now have all "important" formats at my disposal (I think I have them all; I keep looking at the classifieds for things that "I will not be able to buy later because they might not exist anymore" .. )

Each time I look at a 8x10 neg or slide, I start drooling and grinning, so don't go there 😀 !

Ok, I'm off to the classifieds now. See you !

Stefan.

joe, not sure what to suggest here as I sometimes find it hard or impossible to resist the impulse...
For example, a couple of weeks ago, I stopped into a local antique store and ended up finding and buying a lens. A very nice lens and the price was silly cheap. $10 for a beautiful Pentax M 50/f1.4 lens.
Great deal except that I don't own any K-mount camera.:bang: My next step was to start looking for one, a K2 or an MX were my quarry. Which would have made that $10 bargain about a $200 expense!

Thankfully, just as I was going to my dad's house for our easter dinner, I remembered that he has a K10d.
So, dad now has a nice, fast portrait length lens and I'm not looking for another camera system.
Dodged a bullet there, I think.

here's an idea:

a lot less than that M-4p and, maybe, a new way to use your RD 1?
Rob

Whuhaha, that could be me, I always fall for cosmic schemes like that.

Solution: Buy the darn thing and once I have thus forfilled my 'craving' and the rationale kicks in, sell it at a profit! 😀

Right now I have accomplished the nirvana-like state of TGE (Temporary Gear Equillibrium) but only if I forget about owning a Hektor 73mm 1.9...😱

Stop looking at the classifieds! I don't look there, so my main source of temptation is meeting people who say, "have a look through the viewfinder on this" or who stick a lens onto my camera for the afternoon. It gives you a certain itch!

Same here, except that in one sense it's worse for me: I get handed stuff (and sometimes lent it) as part of my job. That's why I ended up buying a 75 Summicron, 90 Thambar and M9.

On the bright side, most of the time, there's almost nothing in the classifieds that does anything I can't already do, usually better and more enjoyably, with gear I already have. Where there are 'better' choices, such as Hasselblad instead of the KowaSIX I inherited from my father-in-law or the Pentacon 6TL I bought for one article (!), I console myself with the thought that I don't use 6x6 SLRs much and that indeed, I sold my 500C a quarter of a century ago and have never really missed it.

Another advantage of actually getting my hands on stuff is that I don't have to fantasize about it. When I tried the X100 at photokina, I thought, "Yeah, looks like a nice camera, but I'll wait to see if it actually works before getting too excited."

Cheers,

R.

Joe, it could just be your wallet saying it's time to start collecting NIkon rangefinders...

If not, do you have a 21mm Super Angulon? If not, that's the lens to get.
mmmmmmm Super Angulon...

Phil Forrest

Joe you are certainly not alone and I commend you for resisting.

Lets stay strong together 😀

Now the Tiderace x-treme or the Seabird Black Pearl that's something else. (drool)

That's what get's me, I look and go... "Ohh, that's nice". Then I tell myself I have to buy it as I might never see another like it.

Stupid really, but then it stop's me spending my money on another stupid purchase... (There was a time when I almost bought a 36 foot yacht, I can't swim or sail, but it was a good deal)
