I own a Canonet GIII Ql17 which I replaced the seals on and really like it. Yesterday I was treasure hunting at the Salvation Army and found two Rangefinders a Canonet GII QL17 which is in much better shape than the one I already own and an A35 F. I got them for 6.99 each. I'm curious about the A35 F, is it highly regarded? my guess is it's not as desirable as the Ql17 but I just thought I'd ask I see none of themon Ebay which surprised me a bit. Also I've seen it referred to as the "Nighter" what is the meaning behind that name? All in all not a bad day The other salvation army has a grossly overpriced but amazing looking Kodak 35 Rangefinder they want 50.00 for it.

That's a nice find. The A35F isn't quite as nice as the QL17 but it's certainly a bargain at that price. I wish our local thift stores had stuff that nice.

This page has some information about the A35F. While I've never used one it sounds like Canon's answer to cameras like the Konica C35 Automatic. A typical automatic rangefinder of the era. They make nice carry-around cameras. And that stealthy black body would probably be good for street shooting.

Of all the low end camera I have bought and sold, the A35F is the one I regret selling the most. I rarely see them on the bay or anywhere. Nice find, excellent shooter.

I really like the A35F. It was the first camera I ever used, and it has a special place in my heart. In fact, I still have my mom's.

As far as using it, like others have stated it's autoexposure. I liken it to a canonet 28 with a built in flash, sexier body. I'm pretty sure they both have the same 40mm focal length and are both f2.8. I'm not sure if the lens is the same on both, but they both take great photos.

Here's one I took of my girlfriend, who is incidentally holding a canonet 28. it was an overcast day:

Well,I'm happy to hear that it's a good shooter, I should probably sell one of the QL17's
I really don't need two. Any idea why they call it the "Nighter"?

From the Canon Camera Museum:
"In Japan, the camera was nicknamed "Nighter" which refers to night baseball games."
