Helen,
If you're having a little trouble getting accuracy of focus at f/1.5, most probably, I'd say that your Sonnar lens is optimised at f/2.8
Cheers
Shane

My trick for the Sonnar at f/1.5? Focus normally then lean in a smidge. Or focus on something juuuust behind what you want (e.g. ears instead of eyes). It really just applies at/near MFD (and obviously wide open). Mine's an f/2.8 version - and boy does it sing at f/2.8. Go figure, I prefer to use the Sonnar wide open. I have to send it off to Zeiss anyway, so I might go for a re-tune.
Do it. I sent mine to Cosina and have been completely satisfied since. Admittedly I'm hooked on wide open and close in. I almost never use by choice that lens for small apertures or infinity shots.
My C-Sonnar went to DAG for 6-bit coding and a focus tune... He found a nice compromise with my sample that gives it accurate focus at f/2 and 2.8, minimizing the adjustment needed wide open, while maintaining adequate accuracy at smaller apertures. I'm pretty pleased, as wide-open is for me a special use where a slight focus adjustment is acceptable.

That's GREAT to hear...
at present Don/Dag has my 35 lux & my 50 lux
tweaking them a bit
so when they get returned
perhaps I will send Him the Sonnar
unless someone Buys it in the next day
otherwise I will KEEP HER !

That's basically how Cosina optimises for f/1.5. They adjust so that at the minimum focus distance and f/1.5 the focus point is at very front of the DOF and inside the DOF at f/2 and f/2.8.
Edited to add: Although they recommend adjusting the lens as described above as the "default" adjustment, Cosina asks that if you have a special request to include a description of how you want the lens adjusted when you send the lens to them.

To really compare those two lenses, I would think someone needs to shoot the same object with identical setup except the lenses, and then post the images here.
Without it, we can talk about "lens signature" all we want...and not getting any clearer in understanding.
Btw, I think Nokton f1.5 is the best 50mm lens, and I know it's the fact, well... mainly because it's the only one I have

David Hegar;1327243 Btw said:Having used BOTH Lenses I must AGREE
my Preference for EASE OF USE and Smoother background is the Nokton 1.5
The CSonnar is Beautifully Fatter & Richer in Roundness & Tone
but I found my c sonnar to have a rather choppy bokeh
I know its a rather Subjective thing
as well as to my EYE
but each and every lens can be a touch different in rendering / I went through 3 noktons to find the ONE i liked

What were you focusing on in the last picture? I can't believe you were shooting for the people, and the focus was that far off! That would drive me insane.
