New York December NYC Meet-Up

Dang!

Dang!

I'm always mere minutes from making one of these get togethers.

I'm going to be staying in Jersey City from the 17th into the first week of January. I'll be in Manhattan every day to bunny sit a friend's rabbits on the upper west side.

On the 18th I'm volunteering right during your meeting time at the Metropolitan Pavilion on 18th St. near 6th Ave. I'll be there till 3 then I'm not sure what we're doing.

As I can't make it on Sunday, I'd enjoy meeting up with fellow RFF'ers for lunch or a sip of good poison.

A lot happens in a month. I got one of those brand new 50 Lux ASPH that are impossible to obtain, got a minty 0.85 M-body rigged up and pimp out in anticipation of the third annual pagent, and then proceed to fall down an embankment in the South Bronx while shooting with Andre and John and scuff the hell out of a brand new camera. One day you have a minty rig and then a monent later you have a user. Oh-well.

Only cosmetic damage, nicks, scraps and scuffs. Now I feel that my new rig is broken in and that I don't have to baby it anymore. LOL. Now let's see if I can wear out a Leica.

Not as cool as Phil's M-4 that was in Iraq and went through all kinda of harsh use. As I remember dropped in an armoured personel carrier while under fire and also got fully immersed in water. I want to see that rig.

Phil,

Bring your M4 if you can.

I cant wait for this meet! Yaay!

I just bought a split image screen for my Nikon D200. Hopefully it gets here in time for the meet.

I'll bring the M4, for sure.
The incident wasn't in a vehicle though. I was a Seabee and they don't allow us in military armor, we have to make due with construction equipment.
It's in remarkably good shape though, I warn you. That chrome really holds up well and Sherry K banged out a dent in the top plate after I got back to the states. Now there are just a few tool marks on it.

Sherry is great. She overhauled my Wetzlar M6 and performed a MP finder upgrade. What a smooth camera.

See you soon.

Cal - sorry to hear that! Are you okay? cosmetic damage is absolutely fine, you have a story to tell in the beauty contest instead. That counts as inner beauty.

This Sunday... let's make it a big meet-up! Anyone have a 50mm Elmar-M (black one) they can bring?

A few scabs on my hand from where I braced my fall. At the pagant I planed to have someone who never opened a brand new camera open the box and take it out of its presitation case, with the plastic still on the bottom plate, then assemble the rig by pimping it out with the Rapidwinder and Rapidgrip. Basically it was just like a new camera. Oh-well. Anyways its not like scratching a good negative.

Anyways the rangefinder patch flares like a Mo-Fo and needs to get upgraded to a MP finder pronto, but I like the brightness as well as the magnification. My current kit is the pimped out Wetzlar M6 for wides and the M6 HM for 50's and my beloved 75 Lux. Pretty hard to justify an a la carte MP with 0.85 VF'er because the price hurts.

BTW Phil I'll bring out my F3P that was a real "Press Camera" that was in Kuwatt in Operation Desert Storm. I'll probably rig it out with the 58/1.2 Noct-Nikkor.

Funny how all my Leicas resemble motor driven Nikon F3's with Rapidgrips and Rapidwinders. LOL.

I've always wanted one for awhile, but it may not be practical based on my other lenses. I'd love to see one in person.

I had to choose between the 50/3.5 Nickel Heliar and the version 3 50/2.8 Elmar. They are kinda similar in their look, but I found the Nickel Heliar had the edge as far as being more sharp and detailed. Version 3 is the last version before they became discontinued and has multicoating. The Nickel Heliar won because it had a more modern look.

To me the negatives really had some lively pop to them that made them seem more 3-D. Definately a fun lens. I think Scott likes his a lot with his M9. He bought the Elmar to compliment the 50 Lux ASPH he has. The thin diameter of the lens barrel makes for a very hyper fast focus. In this regard, from what I remember, the Elmar was faster than my Nickel Heliar because it had a shorter throw (Nickel Heliar is 180 degrees).

Cal is right, I have the last version of the Elmar-M 50. I sold a Summicron 50 because I felt it was pretty close to the Summilux 50. The Elmar is its own creature, and it is great. Collapses nicely in the M9. And Cal is also right about the focus, you can really move from min to max with a short twist. I use it all the time.

I don't think I can make it this Sunday to the meetup, though. I would really like to make it to the Jan meetup. (May I preemptively suggest Jan 15 for that date?)

Oh man, I was excited for a minute... thinking I'd get to handle the elmar.

January 15 sounds fine to me.

Back in 2003 I had an opportunity to buy an F3P with MD4 for only $80. It all worked too! The camera was beat to $#!t though and I thought it was worthless. About 60% brassed with a few dents. Well-loved camera for sure. Anyway, I already had an F3HP at the time and an F4 (plus I knew I was about to deploy and didn't want to store even more gear) so I bought the 20mm f/3.5 AIS off of it for $15 and didn't look back. Now I kick myself all the time...

I don't have anything rare to show off but I will bring my homemade 4x5SW point & shoot. It's an UGLY duckling but makes a nice giant negative that conveniently matches the FOV of my 21mm Zeiss finder.

Man, I guess I'm not packing light on this trip!

We love crazy cameras. I'll also bring out my Plaubel 69W. What I like on the Plaubel is being able to shoot a 6x9 format and have shifts for perspective control on a 120/220 camera. The lens is a 47/5.6 Super Augulon that's a 21mm equivilent.

Also know that Cristian is our mad scientist of our group. Basically he builds crazy rigs and designs all kinds of stuff. You guys have to talk. This is a guy who carries a Linhoff.
