New York December NYC Meet-Up

The 18th work best for me as well.

John G. - Yes, the 1:1 viewfinder in Nikon rangefinders tops any Leica M's. M3 is only a close second. Definitely recommend a Nikon for your re-entering into film.

Cal - Your two lens M6 kit will be a strong contender. What version is your 50 Lux? For some reason, I've gotten a feeling that I will end up getting the second place again no matter what I am going to bring. My prediction would be Tung will take home the trophy with his special edition white M3 with a Rigid and another unannounced lens.

John,

I am a lucky guy who now owns a black 50 Lux ASPH. I kinda built a rig around this lens by specifically getting a M6 HM with a o.85 finder instead of a 0.85 MP. Was also lucky to be able to get a used black Rapidwinder and a mat black Rapidgrip which are hard to find, especially used, at good prices. The M6 HM is one of the last batch of M6 Classics and is in real mint condition. When I took it out of the box and presentation case it was like getting a brand new camera. Its kinda cool owning one of the first M6 Classics and one of the last M6 Classics. BTW only 3130 M6 HM were ever made.

What makes this camera better than a Leica MP is the price (about $2.1K pimped out). Eventually I will get a MP finder upgrade, and will still be less than half the price of a new MP.

My old Wetzlar M6 gets used with a 28 Cron ASPH. It too is pimped out with a Rapidgrip and Rapidwinder, and I find carrying two rigged cameras suits my style and 28 and 50 makes a great combo that makes me shoot lots of film.

BTW I want a 2005 SP with 35/1.8. I love this lens, but you have the multicoated lens where my LTM version is single coated. I would have to get that TA triggerwinder that costs big-big bucks. For me this would be the ultimate rig for a 35 and that lens would be permanently mounted. You have the ultimate rig for a 35 and a lens I would rate with the 35 Lux FLE.

BTW how bright is that VF'er. I found that even though a M3 has higher magnification that the rangefinder patch is not as bright and contrasty as a MP VF'er. For me this is important because a bright rangefinder is really important when shooting in dim light.

I'll be in new york in january, perhaps I'll have to meet up with you guys...:)

I wonder if it's acceptable to bring my 4x5 rangefinder? Or do I have to buy a leica again ;)

Let us know when you're coming so we can make the timing convenient for you. You'll feel right at home because Cristian (CCNY) shoots Linhoff's.

I'll have to bring my Plaubel 69W out to show off. (6x9 with shifts and a 47/5.6 Super Agulon)

We even don't mind SLR's.

Let us know what date, on a weekend, works for you. And yes, bring anything you want camera-wise... even show up without one.

John,

We could change the rules and just limit it to rangefinders. In that case I think your 2005 SP is a ringer. This event is just a way to celebrate great gear, and create an opportunity to make fun of ourselves, and each other for laughs. I stll like boxing, but Ultimate fighting is also interesting. LOL.

The only rule that has to be strictly enforced is "No Biting." LOL.

If that is the polaroid that you converted, then definitely bring it. I just got some Linhof accessories which could end up getting a second life on a wide angle camera mashup project. Perhaps we can share notes. My apartment is getting out of hand with camera parts strewn around everywhere...
I also got a 90/6.8 Angulon which is tiny and nicely folds into the body of the Technika.

btw. I'll be there on the 18th as usual.

Sounds good guys. I'm pretty sure I'll be going home for the weekend of January 21-22nd, and then coming back. I have an internship with this guy for three or four days a week, the rest of the time I'm free. If you set a date for January, I can probably work around it pretty easily. I would imagine weekends are guaranteed to be free though. I'll be sure to bring the 4x5, and either my Mamiya 7 or Rolleiflex (and of course a Olympus Stylus Epic!) looking forward to it!

Cal, no need to change the rule. Leica M is just fine. I am still hoping the Hello Kitty special edition will show up on time for this year's contest. As far as "biting" is concerned, it's hard to say when it comes to enforcement. Anything can happen in NYC.

As for the SP, focusing patches in Leica Ms work better in low light condition for me. I don't see much difference on brightness of the viewfinder as a whole. However, the design of the patch is just different. It's less intrusive in the SP, it fits well with the 1:1 with both eyes open for composition. I took the SP out the other night for a candle light event for Fukushima in Union Sq. Pre-scale focused first then fine tune worked better for me. Part of it was that I am still getting used to the reverse direction of the focusing ring on the lens barrel and/or focusing using my right hand middle finger. Overall, shooting with the SP during reasonable light is a joy!

Acually we can let you book the date that works for you. Just let us know in advance what is good for you.

John,

I'm thinking that you have the ultimate 35 rangefinder rig with the 2005 SP. I want one. Too bad I'm broke.

Looks like another great meetup is in the works. Can't make it this month, holidays et cetera, but would like to make it in January, though I'll be out of town staring Jan 22 for a few weeks, headed to India and Nepal for a few weeks. I'll be sure to bring a stack of prints to share afterwards, of course.

Scott,

Thanks for the heads up on Santacon. Perhaps I'll see you around town Saturday.

If I don't see you have a great time in the Far East.

As the last day of class is the 16th, the college might finally let me out of my cage for this one. If the stack of papers to grade hasn't crushed me (bodily or mentally), I'm going to try to be there. (I'm assuming this is the Puck Fair just below Houston on Lafayette?)

EDIT: My cameras are decidedly not prom queens, so I'll keep them and their battle scars mostly out of sight so they don't get jealous of all the super models. ;)

The usual spot is Puck Fair. We usually get the big round table in the back. You are correct: on Lafayette just below Houston.

BTW we like/love all cameras: even funny ones. At the last Meet-Up Ari brought some kids toy camera. It was really cool. The story was that he bought it for his kid sister a long time ago, it remained unused, then Ari kinda asked for it back.

After the meet-up you should of seen the looks of these two girls who inquired about Ari's camera. LOL.

Also one of the prettiest cameras I ever did see was Carl's black paint M2R with black paint Leicavit. Most of the paint was missing and it was all brassed out.

Nothing wrong will well used cameras.

link to a pretty detailed website about the photoblaster

Here is one of the pictures from the photo-blaster.

Photoblaster Central Park by Lord Nikon 12, on Flickr

I snapped a picture of the girls, but it didn't come out :(

I hate when I miss good shooting opportunities.

Anyways this is another story that makes the NYC Meet-Ups special. Not sure yet if we are at the level of urban legend yet.

Anyways try not to miss the Third Annual Leica M-Body Beauty Pagent in February 2012.

Thanks, Cal!

I've not been in Puck Fair but wandered by earlier this fall -- shouldn't be hard to (re-)find even for a neophyte like myself.

If I get brave I might even tote along one of my pinhole cameras -- they are due for some light after being locked up for months after the move east.

In any case, looking forward to meeting the NYC R(u)FF(ian)s!

Nice to see the meetups rolling!!! I'll try to coincide with one next time i come down to NYC. I'd love to be there for the 3d beauty pageant - the one with the franken-leica was hilarious. Montreal is a nice place to be but i miss the hustle and bustle of the city. And of course i still have to find a local RFF contingent here... the NYC crowd is unreplaceable!!
