Certainly not my fine colonial friend!

I'm a Basque Citizen living under French occupation.

Gora Euskal Herria! Biba Xiberoa!

How did you manage to let the French occupy you? Did they threaten you with their stale baguettes and bad cigarettes?

Seriously, dude. I'd be ashamed to admit the French had me under their thumb. It's like saying you were beat up by mimes. It just isn't manly.

AHA! SO! "Giving away" stuff and too much interest in so-called "rangefinders". RUSSIAN rangefinders and lenses. Sounds a little Socialist to me.

You'd better rethink whether that door is going to be broken down or not. ECHELON is listening to all your calls and FINCEN is adding up how much you're "giving away".

Hmmmmm.......

There is no stigma attached to giving stuff away. I typically donate about $5,000 a year to charities, all tax deductible. As long as one does not try to claim non-qualifying donations (such as RFF freebies) as a deduction on tax forms, there is no problem. Believe or not, rangefinders, even so-called Russian rangefinders, are not prohibited in USA. Russisn products are like any other products in the market. Also, while there is no law against being a socialist in the US, it is generally frowned upon.

Cheers,

dexdog

As I imagined, you are not happy with the powers that be. BTW, I am not your colonial friend. I think that the Basques, like the Kurds in Iraq, should have self-government. Is it likely to happen any time soon? Maybe not. But just because I am a citizen of USA does not make me a colonial friend. Jeez, give a guy a break!

This is basically the entire French Army.

It's called "being nice" and "helping out some guy who bought your camera".

i helped out some jerk in spain by declaring a camera to be worth $5. he threatened me with a negative if i didn't refund his $60, so i gave him his money back.

won't do it again...

man, what a stupid thing to say.

when is a mod going to close this thread?

Huh? Morality is absolute. You said so. Even if it's a "safety issue", you're breaking the law.

But you DO have a choice to not send foreign governments money in the form of excess customs duties. You don't have to blindly obey some obscure questionably "moral" concept.

I'm not a socialist and I hate NPR.

I don't buy speeding as a moral issue. When I get a ticket, I pay it and don't try to weasel out of it. Now, I don';t intend to speed, I just find that I tend to drive as fast as everyone else.

I am not "sending money to a foreign government", I'm sending a canera or a lens. What level of taxes or duties imposed by said country is NOT my business. That is between the buyer and HIS country. I'm a neutral third party.

You can do as you please, but respect those of us who wish to not lie and cheat. If you won't respect me, why then should I respect you?

There are a lot of unfortunate events in history. The situation of the Basques is merely an example. As tragic as the partition of the Middle East and Central/Eastern Europe following WW1, except that it happened so long ago

That's my point. Undervaluation is not "illegal". Value is subjective.

You rationalize your behavior when it suits you, then, on the other hand, you immediately declare something else in terms of moral absolutes? Can't you see this clearly?

Now, I don';t intend to speed, I just find that I tend to drive as fast as everyone else.

So your rationalization for illegal behavior is that "everyone else" is doing it?

If you owned a camera and wanted to send it overseas, how would you value it? Without selling it on eBay? Just make up a figure? Pick a number from a price guide?

What if you bought a Leica M4 with Summicron at a yard sale for $10? That's the "value", right? The whole concept of "value" is screwed up. You are not "lying and cheating" anybody with a customs form. Wake up.

Al, well said. I don't understand why it's such an issue if I chose to play by the rules. For that matter, I may choose to sell to North America only just for this reason; to not have to deal with such questions at all. Seems simple enough.. Neutrality isn't so evil ;)

I brought up the point that Americans are the most offended by doing this because it's a "religious" hotpoint.

We have become a nation of fundamental moralists. More people in jail than any other country.

I think I have now illustrated my point that people do not want to "undervalue" on customs forms because they are afraid that God will punish them.

It is a religious issue, not a legal one for most people.
