There is no stigma attached to giving stuff away. I typically donate about $5,000 a year to charities, all tax deductible. As long as one does not try to claim non-qualifying donations (such as RFF freebies) as a deduction on tax forms, there is no problem. Believe or not, rangefinders, even so-called Russian rangefinders, are not prohibited in USA. Russisn products are like any other products in the market. Also, while there is no law against being a socialist in the US, it is generally frowned upon.

I don't buy speeding as a moral issue. When I get a ticket, I pay it and don't try to weasel out of it. Now, I don';t intend to speed, I just find that I tend to drive as fast as everyone else.
I am not "sending money to a foreign government", I'm sending a canera or a lens. What level of taxes or duties imposed by said country is NOT my business. That is between the buyer and HIS country. I'm a neutral third party.
You can do as you please, but respect those of us who wish to not lie and cheat. If you won't respect me, why then should I respect you?

If you owned a camera and wanted to send it overseas, how would you value it? Without selling it on eBay? Just make up a figure? Pick a number from a price guide?
What if you bought a Leica M4 with Summicron at a yard sale for $10? That's the "value", right? The whole concept of "value" is screwed up. You are not "lying and cheating" anybody with a customs form. Wake up.

Al, well said. I don't understand why it's such an issue if I chose to play by the rules. For that matter, I may choose to sell to North America only just for this reason; to not have to deal with such questions at all. Seems simple enough.. Neutrality isn't so evil 😉
