Developers for Agfapan

I've been trying out Agfapan films, specifically APX100 and APX400. Part of the motivation is that Retrophotographic have the films at a good price.

So far I've been blown away by APX100 in Rodinal 1:50, not been impressed by APX400 in Diafine, and quite liked APX400 @ 800 in DDX.

Does anyone have any favoured devs for these films that would be worth trying, especially for APX400?

I bought 1 box of each film at the time agfa closed activities. I find that if apx100 is easily developed by whatever developer you try, apx 400 is a more difficult issue. Lately I've had good results in taming its grain by using hc-110 sol b, but I've also had good results with d76, econotol, ilfosol and rodinal.

I use both of these films extensively, and have done for a number of years. If you're not yet aware of it, AGFA changed the formulation of these films slightly shortly before going under, so you might find that any development times you find online need to be tweaked a little through trial and error.

My favourite devs for APX400 are either HC-110 (dilution e) for 9 minutes (rated at box speed) or Rodinal 1+100 for 16 minutes (rated at 200ASA). It's nice at box speed in XTOL 1+1 too (12 minutes).

APX100 is awesome in Rodinal – one of my all-time favourite combinations. My own preference for the 'final batch' APX100 is to rate it at 125ASA and soup it in Rodinal 1+50 for 17 minutes. As Nuno says though, it's always worked well for me in every developer I've tried.

Gah in a fit of excitement, I mixed up some XTOL today, and started developing a roll of APX400 1+1 in it, only to realise I didn't check the temperature! Well, I'll go for 12 minutes anyway, seeing as the XTOL was probably over 20C and the water was definitely under 20C.

My signature says what I like 😉 but for APX400, which I haven't really played with, PeterC gets good results in Ilfosol. I don't know what time/dilution, though. You could check his flickr stream for some examples.

This info is good to know. A friend gave me most of a 100' roll of APX400, when he went all digital. I've spooled it up, but not run through any of it yet. Guess I'll start with Rodinal, I've got three bottles in the basement.

Wayne: Did you check Massive Dev? Agfapan 25 looks great in just about anything. But I wouldn't let it anywhere near Diafine. 😛

I have one unexposed roll, I'm saving it for an appropriate project. I'll likely put it in the Rodinal/XTol combination.
