Digital Nikon FM2 ?

If Nikon actually does come out with this camera it won't last long. The reviewers will rip it apart because it doesn't have all the latest goodies. Especially if it leaves out video.

I agree that including a Katzeye screen can make a huge difference in manual focus. The focus motor in my Pentax ist DL2 died quite a while back but I have a Katzeye screen and I hardly miss the autofocus.

For me this is what makes this camera so special and interesting! There are many options for video enthusiast, there are many cameras with a lot of "hi-tech" features like GPS, wi-fi etc but there are not many simple cameras.
Let's wait and see if real and what will come 🙂

This is a nice pipe dream. I am not sure if Nikon is brave enough to do it though, or rather do it properly. I'm suspecting what we will see will be more akin to a slimmed down F100, than any sort of reincarnated digital FM/FE. I hope they do make it, but even if they don't, these are great times for cameras, and with the gradual elimination of the lower and lower middle ground, with compacts being replaced by smartphones, the camera market will become more and more about the enthusiast and pro market, and all niches will be considered valuable, imo.

My other feeling is that camera companies have made people wait so long for such cameras, that many may have moved on. Just think of how many Fujis, et al, have been snapped up by photographers desperate for smaller, lighter, capable cameras. With digital cameras now being quite good enough, I think it will be quite difficult to prise these cameras out of people's hands. In years to come, I think business students will be studying case studies of the massive hubris shown by Canon & Nikon..

Agree, both SLR giants left me unimpressed me in the last few years, while the likes of Fuji and Sony are really pushing with interesting stuff
Btw, are you considering an A7 John ? 😀

I'm not sure Jerome. At this time, I'm just using what I have. I may be more interested in this camera than the A7. I prefer old school shutter speed dials and aperture rings. I just wouldn't even know what to do with my cash these days if I was in the market for a new camera. Better not to buy when you think that way...or just buy a Leica.

Nikon aren't stupid but I suspect they may not be too adventurous with a camera of this type and we could be in for a disappointment.

The D700 is a brilliant, brilliant camera but it certainly didn't break any design parameters in it's form.

And it still does absolutely everything you want when you have Ai/Ai-S primes only and don't wan't to buy/use AF lenses.

The only drawback being its weight and size (and the pesky built-in flash which I never ever use). Apart from this... I have fully learnt to live with its design, menu, LCD display and coding wheels. Actually I switch to it from my F/F2/SP/S3 very quickly (and the reverse) without being the least bit annoyed by the different ergonomics.

Yet - size and weight. That's it. So...

I've considered filling mine with helium! 😀

I suppose everyone has noticed the recent burst of really tiny cameras with complex abilities. This new Nikon seems like the logical extension of that. I wouldn't be surprised at all if in a couple of years we're all back to carrying cameras that are sized in proportion to their sensor sizes, instead of the bloated monsters that we've tolerated for the last 10 years or so (half-frame format digitals approaching the body weight and size of 6x6 film cameras?)

I don't have any problem with that trend at all. If they want to put in new features along the way, I won't be complaining about that, either.

See post #96. Maybe true of Canon, but Nikon has surprised us in the past.
