I reckon we just about share the same idea of the perfect camera. 😀
Yes. I agree. Maybe one of these years we will get it.

If Nikon actually does come out with this camera it won't last long. The reviewers will rip it apart because it doesn't have all the latest goodies. Especially if it leaves out video.
Agree, both SLR giants left me unimpressed me in the last few years, while the likes of Fuji and Sony are really pushing with interesting stuff
Btw, are you considering an A7 John ? 😀
Would be cool if its true but I don't think it is, they would never sell enough of them.
The D700 is a brilliant, brilliant camera but it certainly didn't break any design parameters in it's form.
And it still does absolutely everything you want when you have Ai/Ai-S primes only and don't wan't to buy/use AF lenses.
The only drawback being its weight and size (and the pesky built-in flash which I never ever use). Apart from this... I have fully learnt to live with its design, menu, LCD display and coding wheels. Actually I switch to it from my F/F2/SP/S3 very quickly (and the reverse) without being the least bit annoyed by the different ergonomics.
Yet - size and weight. That's it. So...
Nikon aren't stupid but I suspect they may not be too adventurous with a camera of this type and we could be in for a disappointment.

Hmmm, now it supposedly looks more like the F3:
The upcoming camera was described to look more like the classic Nikon F3 instead of the FM2 - this means a more pronounced/bigger/sharper shaped pentaprism viewfinder

F3 lookalike would be fabulous - but please don't make it look like my Nikon panzerwagen F4s... ;-)
