Do 34mm screw-in filters fit Summar?

I recently acquired a B+W 34mm UV/IR filter. It fits perfectly on my Canon 35/2.8 LTM lens, but when I mount it on my 1938 Summar, it won't screw all the way in. I can't tell if that's because the front threads are simply shallower on the Summar than on the filter; or the threads on the lens are messed up (don't think so); or if (heaven forbid) the front lens element protrudes enough that the glass of the filter hits it before it screws in fully.

Anyone with knowledge or experience to share?

Thanks,
Ari

Yes they fit: I use them on mine. Canon made a number of lenses, and filters for them in 34mm, that work quite well.

I am using vintage filters on mine, tend to be a little thicker than B&W?

I'm using a modern, 'optimized for digital' Hoya 34mm filter on mine. 🙂 Hard to find but cheap and multicoated.

There have been threads here in the past about the filter size. It sounded a bit like there may be some variation if I remember correctly.

My S/N is 482xxx, by the way.

Mine is 480xxx, so should be the same mechanics.

I just tried Canon 34mm UV and Hoya 34mm yellow filters on the Summar, and they screw all the way in (and the Canon's glass is mounted right at the edge of the screw threads). Lining the three filters up next to each other, it's apparent that the B+W's screw thread is about 1mm deeper than the other two.

So I guess there's nothing to worry about. I'll just screw in the filter as far as it goes without forcing it, and I'm good to go. 🙂

Thanks all for the info, and thanks to John for the nice UV/IR filter!
