Do you feel the need to have a camera with you at all times?

I've been thinking about buying a Canon S90/S95 for awhile now so I can have a camera on me at all times (despite having the iPhone in my pocket every day). However, I just don't get any joy from using these types of cameras... they just don't do it for me.

Also, lately, I just don't feel the need to have a camera with me at all times. I don't want to be "looking" for photos all the time ... sometimes I just want to float down the sidewalk daydreaming looking at pretty ladies, etc. 😱

Anyway, my point is that I've come to find that the type of camera is very important for me to get in the mood. People say the its the lens that matters, but I really feel it is the body as well. When I use the cameras in my sig, I feel joy. Also, I just don't want to be in photo mode all the time.

I carry a camera with me at all times so I'm probably destined to have a dull, uneventful life. The day I don't have a camera with me will be the day when aliens land or I'll spot Elvis in my local supermarket.

Most phones have a camera nowadays. Cameraphone always good for a quick snap, but whenever I think of it I bring my S90 with me. I have it set up in manual mode and I like it, but that is very personal of course.

I carry a camera to keep the world around me safe and quiet. When I carry my camera, nothing dangerous or interesting happens within 10 miles of me.
I'm convinced we could achieve world peace by putting a camera in the pocket of every wannabe photographer in the world.

Photo mode is a nice word that describes it perfectly that you behave differently when you have a camera with you. Sometimes it's really nice to be without a camera and just look around. When I have a camera with me and don't take a photo then I am very dissatisfied. Leaving the camera at home when I am in shopping mode and not in camera mode removes this feeling.

I used to subscribe to the view touted in camera magazines years ago to 'always have a camera with you', but these days I don't bother. I just take a camera with me when I'm in the mood to take pictures.

I've just got a larger bag so I can take my M8 with me when I'm commuting to work. On other occasions, I take it with me whenever possible, hanging from my shoulder or stuffed in a small camera bag. I take my E-P1 + 20/1.7 in those rare cases when I can't take the M8 along. I very very rarely don't have a camera with me. Which doesn't mean I'm in photo mode all the time -- I just want to have a camera in reach in case I see an opportunity! 🙂

I do not leave the house without a camera. that doesn't mean I always have to be in 'photo mode'.

That's fine, but when I'm on a date or hanging with non-photographer friends, sometimes having a camera can get in the way of just having plain old fun.

I always have one near me: if I am work, in the scooter, car or truck; traveling, same; one on my person when shopping, visiting, at a restaurant, wherever. At home, at least one camera is loaded at all times.

I do not want to argue about details but there is a difference between just "having a camera" (for example "carrying it in a bag and forgetting about it") or visibly carrying a camera (neck-strap and being reminded of it all the time ...), IMHO. 🙂

I was evacuated and was forced to leave my lab, when that Yankee pitcher crashed his plane into a high-rise alongside the East River, and on that day I didn't have a camera with me. I found my way to the river promanaid for a better view and at that point the building looked like a repeat of September 11th because the flames were quickly accellerating up the side of the building. I then figured out that if the building collapsed that I would be in harm's way. I easily had a shot that was more dramatic than the video footage I saw later that night on TV. Oh-well.

It seems like all kinds of odd things, events, and meeting of interesting characters happens every day to me in NYC, and at this point I can't really turn off the photographer mode in me. Even if I'm just carrying a camera, and I take no shots, I feel less vulnerable. Whenever I don't have a camera, I keep on seeing missed shots, so I carry a camera when I can to avoid further regret.
