I'm addicted to looking at and reflecting on great black and white photos. I've always been like this, it's just part of my aesthetic make-up in the same way that I'm sure it is for all our members. I therefore love this site because (1) it's dedicated to presenting such images from across the world, all of a very high standard; and (2) it provides a medium for true photographic conversation amongst equals. I don't see it as a source of learning except in so far as learning comes from (1) and (2), either as a conscious and explicit enterprise on the part of the individual if they so wish, or coincidentally. So for me it's the images themselves and the conversation that count.

For my part, I look at the pictures in the gallery and forum for the pleasure they give. I certainly wouldn't want to criticise any picture in a negative way (although I don't mind in the least if people should criticise mine like this, either politely or not) because I think the best learning comes from analysing what good pictures are - and we get this from looking at them, letting them affect us, reflecting on them, and comparing them with our own images, as well as being involved in the great conversations that this site gives, either as a silent listener or as someone who speaks, as it were.

Until a few days ago I hadn't posted a single image because my enjoyment is (1) and (2) above; and because I don't have a film or film equipped flat-bed scanner and didn't appreciate that scans of prints can work acceptably well although I acknowledge that it's an inferior method.

All the best to fellow members.

Long may RFF continue!

I use flickr, and I post on another forum where it's common practice to start a thread with a set of photographs. It's pretty easy to share something especially if you first put it on flickr, and you can get feedback on the series. The galleries here are a pain: hard to navigate, impossible to show a series, images are too small. I tried it but it just doesn't work for me.

I'd love to post to the gallery, but since the size limit is from the '90s I'd have to re-size my images first and I just don't find it worth the bother.

I don't much care for the gallery here. The thumbs are small, you can't see them all at once if you want to cruise a member's work quickly, and the interface seems slow and clumsy.

I thought that by clicking on your name I would be taken to your gallery to read that funny comment, but nothing happened.

The gallery needs to be easier to use.

^ this.

"The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters."

^ also this...

I try to be as regular as I can. As of late my work has been keeping me busy. The photos posted here are of outstanding quality. It's hard to get comments here. One thing I notice is there are some people who put up some great work but never get any comments at all. I try to comment on their work. If we don't take time to comment they will go away.

I couldn't have said this any better, Greg. I post photos in the gallery here that I think are my best, hoping to get feedback to see if I am on the right track, or if I am just crazy. Feedback certainly helps, positive or negative. But I must admit that I am guilty about not leaving enough feedback, mainly because I am unsure if I have the credibility to judge the work of those far more experienced than I.

ETA I can't express enough what a thrill it has been the few times that my images have been included in the "Gallery picks of the Week" thread in the "Critiques ..." subforum.

I voted "I can't get my head around..."

The reason? I don't like posting at max. 600 x 600 pixels. I've been asking again and again how to circumvent this (because I see larger pictures here all the time), but so far no one has seen fit to enlighten me. Maybe now? :D
RFF'er Rob Klurfield uses an elegant solution to this, he uploads a thumbnail to the gallery, and then usses bbcode to post a larger version of the same picture as a comment to his gallery pic.

And the limit is not in pixel size, but in file size (200kb). I usually post 800 X 800 pics (or larger) by saving the jpeg image at a quality level of 85 to 90, which is more than acceptable for the web.

I don't post images nearly as much as I would like to. I like the Gallery. I like the Monday picks, but I don't take part nearly as much as I should. I only post from wet prints, which is part of the problem, they're more time consuming than scanned images. I tend not to post family photos or street type photos where people are readily recognizable.

Some forums on RFF don't have the functionality to post pictures linked from other sites. I don't know why that is, maybe the mods can tell us? In the critique forums, you can post pics the way I wrote about.

Ah, OK, I've never posted to the critique forums. Maybe we could have that option in the "Show us your pictures taken with the xx"-threads as well?

I just tried that, and it seems to downscale the photo to 600 max length... damn...

I personally think posting pictures here and contributing to image threads is very important.

Every week, after uploading to smugmug and flickr, I select a few pictures, resize and post here. Nothing much to it.

Roland.

Well, I posted two photos to my Gallery yesterday. Though no one has commented on them, I'm surprised that they are actually having views! I posted the same photos to Flickr and they got more views here than in Flickr so far... Interesting!

However, the file size is very small and I had some trouble scaling the photos but when I changed the format to .jpeg it was ok.

"that radical" ... I like that Jan! :p

I think years ago it was fair to expect members to go easy on the non RF images in the gallery but times have changed (thanks to Stephen) and we seem to be embracing a lot of other non RF cameras. The Fuji X series is a prime example!

As they say ... "It's all good!" :D

I'm glad you read it the way I wrote it. Good fun. I'm also impressed you read it ;D

I voted for the flickr option and that's true, but I also link back from flickr into the threads. I just don't understand how to upload to RFF galleries. So I post photos this way.

I used to post more back when we could link Flickr/etc.. images directly to the gallery. Now I only put up experiments or, the odd shot I think might be interesting to those few member who actually "Hang Out" primarily in the gallery ... a good thing :) (as opposed to the gear threads ...maybe a bad thing). It's a bit awkward making and storing an image sized just to post here. Hot linking to threads is easy but I rarely start my own.

I like this site and I would post more images, but I don't like Flickr particularly and do not load any of my images to any other galleries where I could post something bigger than a thumbnail. My only complaints about Rangefinderform are this protocol for posting full-size images and the abysmal search engine word requirements and timeouts. Other than that, I find everything else to be excellent.

I post images in threads but for some reason I can not post images in the gallery, I get some strange message telling me I can't.......I'm sure if I asked Stephen or one of the moderators about it, they could help me out....

I actually only post a small percentage of my photos online (here, Flickr,etc...) due to many reasons.....but I try to share some of my images here and I appreciate seeing images by other members here.....

All the talk about gear is fine, I enjoy reading and learning from fellow rff members, but to be honest, I'm more interested in seeing photos.

Cheers, michael

Astro, another positive vote for your work. I have to say a rosary after I look at your pictures, but that's ok. ;-)

I like to post photos and comment on others pictures, but only when they catch my eye and I have something positive to say. It is interesting to see which of my pics get NO comment, sometimes they are the ones I am happiest with.
