I don't do that much colour so I'm always unsure if I have them right, what do you think about this?



I keep reprinting it and I'm never completely happy with how it comes out

I like the colours, the people, and the horizontal structure, but the empty space at bottom right seems to leave it a bit unbalanced (for me).

Edit: really like the simple colour palette - yellow in the little child's hat, the float and the ice-cream trolley; blue in the bikini-top, the sea and the sky; and the magenta (?) of the other float and the towels on the sand.

For the balance - maybe crop up from the bottom to remove the wooden platform at lower left?

This picture looks fine to me; no blown highlights, nice shadow detail, nice compo (I like the 3 yellow "points"), no color cast that I can see and straight horizon.

Is this my worst 😛 ?

I think the picture is good but I don't dig the big thick grey border - I'd be running a white 5px on each side border instead.

The picture's nice. Nothing earthshattering but nice. Would probably work well in a meaningful series of images. If I were you I'd lose the image title and copyright notice.

Ah, sorry the border is just for title and handling ... I print oversized like that so I don't get fingerprints on the image, it gets covered by the mount/matte

To answer your question: Yes, it looks like you got the colors right, just right. (from the turned head of the swimmer I'd say Mom's about to grab some cash from her purse for ice creme all around!)

I don't like the three horizontals but I do like the way you've used the colours.

I prefer the composition of the original (?) that you put in your 'Dark art of composition' thread. I like the mountains across the sea and the humour with the chap on the li-lo, he distracts my eye and stops me from whizzing off the edge of the photo. The saturated colours appeal more to my eye too. Just straighten the horizon on that one and pop it in the printer. 🙂

Agreed. Otherwise a great pic, I love the blue vs yellow and mellow colors.

^ Don't agree at all. If you crop the bottom it becomes a boring exercise in rule of thirds. A flag, in fact.

Overall it seems too washed out. The one Mick gave a link for has much better shadow detail. Also the colors are more vivid. The sand is now overpowering in it's brightness (and lack of detail). I like the boardwalk in the foreground - adds depth.

I like the colors. Being on the beach makes me happy, and your photo makes it easy to imagine being on the beach. The colors: I'm deuteranopic, and these are the kind of colors that look good together to me. The dominance of blue on the top and tan on the bottom, makes the central stripe of more complex colors well contrasted, and magnified beyond it's relative size compared to the top and bottom. This gives the picture extra 'life'.

Thanks chaps, that's really useful stuff .. I'm trying to thin out my portfolios and this one's been in and out like a fiddlers elbow

I played with cropping it a bit but it lost it's space and became too claustrophobic, not at all like that place itself. The colour has been a pain, there were huge forest fires on the other side of the strait tinted the sky and sea a very odd green colour. I took the photo, part of a group, mid summer, mid day it was very hot and very very bright.

The colors palette is great. You've got blue, yellow, and magenta that repeat in different parts of the frame. The yellows and magenta are vibrant and contrast with the muted blues and earth tones. Excellent use of color, but the photo doesn't amaze me. I'd love to have it in my portfolio though!

This is a great photo. I really like it, wouldn't change a thing.

What I find most interesting is how many opinions there are already about this one picture. Makes me realise that old saying is true, can't please all of the people all of the time. 🙂
