Dual Range Summicron Questions

my problem is that are a bazillion different 50mm lenses available for the m-mount, and i want to get an overview of the qualitative differences. your post actually helped quite a bit. everyone seems to love the DR, but few can express why in words. the price is very attractive, so it looks like a good starting point.

Very perceptive observation. Perhaps everyone's love affair with the DR (and similarly with the equivalent 'rigid') Summicron 50 is based on the simple fact that a big percentage of first-time Leica users starts with this lens, precisely for the reasons you imply: approachable price, stellar reputation, unsurpassed quality of construction, excellent performance. With so many virtues, it's difficult not to love your first 'serious' rangefinder lens - it gives you all these photos that seemed so far to escape you (mainly decent available light photos).

Does the DR have the focusing knob and the infinity lock that the rigid has?

I can only speak for my late version 50 DR: Nope. I also have a Nikkor 50/1.4 with an infinity lock. They both handle well. I think if I had to choose, I would choose a lens with no lock. YMMV.

Yes Wayne my only concern is the ergonomics. My rigid is an excellent lens but OTOH I find tabs/knobs/infinity locks annoying. So long as that focusing ring doesn't slide up and down the barrel I may swap my rigid for a DR.

Peter,

I felt the same way about it and removed the infinity lock (quite easy). Works smashingly now. Luckily the Rigid has a very beefy knurled focusing ridge in addition to the tab.

thanks everyone for the insights. i just put money down on nice 50 dr with eyes on an m4-2 body. both have been recent cla'd by DAG, and feel really nice. i can't wait to pick them up on friday!

by the way, i could not get the 50 dr to focus at infinity on any of the bessa bodies, and it wouldn't mount at all on the r2m. is this normal?

I think the DR was one of the lenses that needed modification for the M5, it (an original) should be ok on M4-2 though. Many M4-2 will have been updated to later standards, and some prople dont notice the problems anyway.

Burn film dont worry

Not the lens on an M5. The goggles need a 30 second screw & post removal. After which the lens & goggles work perfectly on the M5. Been there. Done that. Got the picture of the t-shirt. 😀
