ELCAN replica lens posts

Also if you want to try the closest good quality montblanc 149 replica, try the Chinese copy made in Republic of China, it called Penlux masterpiece grande

I stumbled on Weibo account of LLL and seems like not only Hologon, but Noctilux 1.2/50 is in the works... Engineering sample, from what my google translator says:

Just received a silver version of the lens. Took few images this afternoon and everything is very consistent with Ed's review.

It would be nice to see at least snippets of these images at high resolution, but the overall effect in your images is what I am familiar with from this lens. Thank you for posting them, and the kind words.

Ed

I just posted full resolution of 2480 x 1683 px for the three images above but I don't if you will be able to view them at that resolution. Few comments from my very early and limited observations: 1) center sharpness at f/2.0 is really excellent with very good color renditions; 2) the MTF charts published by Light Lens Lab seem to be pretty consistent with the copy that I got; 3) mechanically, the lens is very well make with smooth focus feel (not too light) and positive aperture clicks; 4) optically, my copy is without any defect and misalignment. Although I have not made any comparisons with other M-mount or LTM-mount 50mm lenses that I have, from about 100+ images I took, this lens do have some unique and interesting characters, particularly in 1 - 3 meters focus distance. The image quality in the center focal plane is very attractive. In some way, this lens reminds me of images taken with my Leica Elmar-M 50mm lens in good lighting conditions. There are something special about the 4-element optical design if one doesn't worry too much of outer edge performance.

Both the ELCAN and the Elmar (along with the Zeiss Tessar) are triplet derivatives. They share some image qualities of sharpness and clarity at the center, and a roundness of image which is very pleasing. Only the others 2 lenses are f/3.5, and stretched to f/2.8, not f/2 like the ELCAN.

Thank you zleica for your images. This thread seemed to have died before you posted them. I hope others will get this interesting lens and post more images. I have been using my prototype as my go-to lens right now with the M10M, especially for portraits like this one.

Very nice image, Ed. I have been taking test shoots with this lens and it has some very interesting characters, which I have not seen in some of my other 50mm lenses. I think that the 'unbalanced' combination of very strong performance in the center and weak performance in the outer zone made the images it produced very affective. The color coating of the lens is also very nice, more in line with Leica modern lens line than that of Zeiss ZM line. Here is one taken this morning (ISO 1250, 1/90, f/2.8).

Very nice, Ed! I can see why you would use this lens for such a portrait.

My image was slightly cropped, but like so many images that are keepers for me, I must have subconsciously noted the compositional element - the plant on the left side of the image, and how rendering this out of focus echoed with her hair. Even cutting off the top of her hair inadvertently feels much better than having it there, IMO. Again an echo with the plant not being all there either., This was a grab shot, so she was largely unaware until the last second. I am no good at formal portraits - lighting them, getting a happy feeling.

I believe this was about f/6.3, but fairly close up.

From the sample images the micro contrast and 3d rendering is quite stunning. Thankyou. Reminds me of the rendering from my Elmar m where it comes to life from f4
