Elmar 90/4 Collapsible

Hi there

I'm trying to get a 90mm lens for use in my RD-1, and it seems that Elmar 90/4 Collapsible is a nice one. The question is whether the collapsible lens will extend backward such that it will touch the CCD sensor of RD-1.

Any idea?

The RD-1 is based on a Bessa chassis, if i remember correctly, so it's very likely that you'd run into problems if you collapse the lens inside the camera. From what I recall, the same happens to the Bessa R (I frankly don't know if it's the case with later models), with the collapsible 50mm 'cron. I'd rather assume that collapsing the lens maybe harmful for the sensor.

Now... there are those who put a Dymo tape on the lens barrel to stop it just right before hitting the shutter curtain... and I mean this lens, not the 'cron.

Let's see what experienced Bessa users have to say. All my info comes from looking at the cameras and venturing an educated guess... Have fun! 🙂

No problem on the R-D1 in my experience. The Elmar 90/4 collapses less deeply than the Elmar 50/2.8 actually.
Edit: Given the age of the beast, check out that the tube does not wobble in the mount though otherwise its bottom could hit the roller cam of the rangefinder.

LCT's right - no prob, but collapse gently to avoid scraping cam.

After all the trouble I went to, folk could at least try reading the R-D1 FAQ! 🙄

There is the 1950s version of the Elmar collapsible, and the modern version. I have the 1950's lens, which collapses fairly deeply into my M3.

Which version are you looking at?

Thanks. I am looking at the 1954 Elmar 90/F4 (3 Group 4 Elements), which should be the first generation of this lens.
