who can tell me about the specifications and history of this lens, or where to find it? I'm trying to find filters that fit it.

Leica`s most famous lens, what year did it start 1929/30? I don`t remember, but it was produced till it was replaced by the Elmar f2.8/50 in the late 1950`s/early 60`s. (I think more of these lenses were made than any other lens, if I`m not mistaken)
A36 clamp-on filters are the norm, (you have to preset your f-stop before using the filter, though the inside thread round the lens is what 22mm or something? ~ those filters original as LEITZ filters are impossible to find, and I think that they were all pre 1934 anyway.......so go look for A36 or 36mm at that evil online auction place
Prices run from $10 to $50 depending on what filter.

thanks, Tom! I just won a filter that the seller says, it is screwed into the front element of the lens, I guess this filter brings more convinience, right? And, 22mm? If I know the diameter, I can buy a brand new from B+W.Leica`s most famous lens, what year did it start 1929/30? Yvon,
The seller says it's an E19 filter and I recall that I was reading somewhere on the net that this is the correct filter size for the Elmar (and IIRC the Industar-22 as well). But I can't find the source any more. :-(
Cheers,
Uwe

thanks, I was lucky that I got it right. I was not sure about it at the beginning, but looked at the price I decided to bid it, no matter what, not my loss.Yvon,

The screw in filter size is 19mm, the same as the Argus C3.
Walz filters for the Argus C3 50mm F3.5 work well with the Elmar, and allow you to change F-Stop after putting the filter in place. Like on my coated Elmar...

thanks. why does it have such a strange name? Abbreviation? and someone refers it as"nearly impossible to find"Get yourself a Leitz "SOOGZ" filter adapter (A36 to E39)this allows you to use E39 filters and E39 hoods on the 50mm f3.5 Elmar which is A36 size filter fitting. This gives you a wider choice in filters and E39 filters are much easier to source.

Hi,
It's not a name just a five letter code instead of a number for the item. And they're still around. Try this: Item No 390050140044 on ebay...

All of Leica's products used to have 5-letter code names. Let you order them clearly by Telegraph, while only paying for one word. Think of a world before the Internet, before international long distance telephones.

I see your point. So these are officially leica products. But where do you get these codes from? All of Leica's products used to have 5-letter code names. Search on ebay and you should find original and reprinted copies of Leica's catalogues for 1933 and '36. They have a beige cover with red printing on them. Original copies are often cheaper than the reprints; it's a matter of luck (as usual). These ones will have the words "... Wetzlat and London" and are shown here.

In the order '33; '36 and a reprint of '36 (cleaner) and on the right Leitz NY '39.
You'll also find copies of the Leitz New York catalogue on ebay from time to time. My 1939 copy is interesting becaue is shows the USA version of some things and has catalogue numbers and not code letters.
Other (dearer) sources are the catalogues for the public, especially (imo) "Handle the Leica". There's a scan of it and some other stuff here:

Hope this is some use.

thanks David. I found not only 1933's and 1936's catalogue on ebay but you only mentioned these two. Does it mean Leica stoped producing such accessories after the period?Hi,

All it boils down to is that I've little interest in the screw thread models after the 1930's. Nothing more. You'll find lists of numbers in the various price lists they issued over the years. But these seldom appear on ebay, probably as they are boring to most people. Also the larger catalogues were restricted to dealers. But there's lots of them on ebay called "General Catalogue" etc.
Hope this helps.
Regards, David
