50mm Elmar-M on Leica M9

Wonderful picture! I love everything about it: subject, composition and color. And I think the light is a big part of what makes it special, with great shadow fill and soft contrast.

Well, mounting an unmodified SA or collapsing an Elmar-M into the M5 would destroy the metering stalk, but I wouldn't expect damage to either lens. (I believe Michael knows this. He was just kidding in post # 306. Note the 😀.)

Coelacanth shows how to mount the Elmar-M safely in post # 272. I like the idea. The M5 is the only way to get an accurate 50mm frameline with metering.

Yes - sorry -- Aussie irony, and I forgot the 🙄

Rightoh back to images....

Just curious, but that looks like the original Elmar in an M mount as opposed to the latest Elmar-M. Does the recent Elmar-M collapse the same distance into the body? If so, how do you all store it off camera? Collapsed with a deep rear cap or extended with a standard cap?

I don't have the Elmar, just the Elmar M: it collapses too far for the M5. The rare times it's not on a camera I have it semi-collapsed with a deep rear cap.

Observant, but no cigar
Elmar, 3.5 & 2.8 50's (feet) and -M (90's)

Interesting. The mount (where the red dot is) doesn't have parallel edges like the black ones (see above photo mounted to an M5 post #273 for example)? Is this true of all chrome ones, or was there a production change?

Actually this is from the M6J,
You are quite right the later Chrome (and Black) ones don't have the same look as the early Elmar

One thing that holds me back is the lack of a focusing tab on the Elmar-M. I'm very used to just extending a finger to the focusing tab on lenses that have one. And the tab/button of the pre-M Elmar is especially comfortable to me. I know some don't like the infinity lock. It doesn't bother me. Having to grip the focusing mount with two fingers near the mount is slightly more awkward to me. Still, I'd like the improved optical performance of the M. Maybe I'm just hard to please . . . 🙁
