Thank you for your warm words. yes I need to get used to it. my other 50's are- elmar 50 3.5 rs, summar, summicron collapsible , zeiss opton sonnar 1.5, summarit 1.5 and hexanon M 50\2.
I'v had modern lenses before such as: planar zm, nokton 1.5 and color skopar 2.5
This lens is different .

I find that our taste for 50s is similar, except I haven't try the red scale elmar, 50/1.5 Sonnar, Collapsible Cron and M-Hexanon myself.

my allarounder 50 is the Hexanon , and it is a great lens.
I find the elmar M a little more clear , pity it is not a F2 lens.

Interesting, that many of the shots here using the version II Elmar are in black and white, and people are pleased with the B&W rendering of this lens. Interesting because it's higher in contrast than the V. I; supposedly a more moderate contrast is often preferred for B&W, yet the V. II is taking the honors.

Ride, dive, shoot.
This lens is sharp, and the contrast is there but I think it's from modern coating, lack of flare and just sharp rendering of the lens, not from decisively contrasty optical design. I find the lens to be very forgiving for black and white. I think this lens has a classic and vintage-like rendering while staying extremely robust against flare/ghosting thanks to modern coating. Also the ergonomics/handling is far better than the older counterpart.

Some Elmar-M lenses, mine for instance, have the rear elements uncoated. One of my other favorites has this too: the Color-Skopar 50mm f/2.5. I guess this is done to keep the contrast moderate.

It would be good to see some side-by-side comparisons of photos taken with the V. 2 Elmar, alongside other 50's such as the DRS; the version 3 11817; the collapsible Summicron; the Zeiss Planar; and maybe even the version 1 2.8 Elmar.

Interesting, any idea how this varies over the production run of the lenses? My silver 1994 Elmar-M has rear elements that are coated.
