Elmarit 28 Asph. sharpness wide open

Sorry for the small images, but the attachment limit doesn't allow me to upload bigger ones.

I know that lenses perform stopped down better than wide open. But is there something wrong with my lens or is this normal wide open performance of the lens? The left image is f/2.8 and the right is f/5.6 which seems to be the sweet spot. Shot on a m8 at iso 160 with a tripod in raw. No editing and no sharpening. Saved as jpg with max quality.

Are your photo's crop? And if yes, from where in photo? Could you please post 100% crops of corners for comparison.

Even from such a excellent lens as the 28/2,8 ASPH the corner sharpness is lower than middle, and lower than at optimum aperture. Then again, sharpness is not everything 🙂

Here is a small comparing of the 28/2,8 ASPH with a Perar 4/28 MC Super-Tpiplet. You can get some indication of corner sharpness, but please note that these are taken with a NEX-5n.

If they're 100% crops from somewhere near the edge they look about right to me.

The 28/2.8 ASPH is one of my favourite lenses BTW, so small, great ergonomics.

The focus could be a little bit off and f/5.6 gives enough DOF to get it sharp.
