I have the impression that the scanning results are sharper by putting the negs directly on the glass plate instead of using the strip holders.

I have the 4180 which is a cousin/sibling/kin to the 4870; I've never scanned without the strip holder, but I don't believe I've ever had "soft" scans, either. Are you seeing softness in your scans?

Not in all cases. these scanners lack a focus control and are usually calibrated a couple of mm's off of the surface.

If we are talking about medium format negs, let me second the recommendation on Doug Fisher's Holdera or whatever it is called.
It's even better with the anti-Newton's ring glass inlay, where you tape the neg to the glass inlay.
