I am struggling :bang: to figure this out. I have the Epson driver for Windows 10. I removed the document mat from under the cover. The 4X5 negative is placed correctly in the 4X5 holder that came with the scanner, and the holder is set with the little tabs in the grooves in the scanner. .
In professional mode, the option for negatives just doesn't show up. The Document Type is limited to Reflective, with the "Film" option grayed out.
Any help is appreciated!

Are you using Epson scan? I only starting 4x5, tried once, works fine, but I an using Silverfast.

You have to leave the top edge of the document glass free. Have a look at the transparency holder and you can see the area of the holder that is not covered up.

He already stated that he is using the correct holder in correct orientation.
Which Epson Scan version are you using? Have you tried the "Reset all" option for restoring the settings to default values (it's in the "Configuration" at the bottom of the main window and then in the "Other" tab of the "Configuration" window)?
And also check the cable connection of the lid and the bottom of the scanner. No light in the lid - no scanning of transparent materials!

The preview and the scan do the same thing. Will check the cable connection of the lid, didn't pay attention that it has its own.
I have done 35mm and medium format scans with the same scanner in the past. I downloaded the latest Epson driver from their website at one point yesterday, although I probably had the same one from before. Thanks all!

I had this same issue a few years back, and it was the cable connection to the lid. The connection would work only intermittently.
This worked for me, but use at your own risk.. I used some Radio Shack TV Tuner and electronics spray cleaner and sprayed directly into the cable connection socket on the lid. Fixed. Good luck.

Turned out the lid cable was disconnected. Must have done that at some point in the couple of years since I have scanned negatives.
For anyone else who encounters this in the future, there's a cable that comes out of the rear of the Epson scanner lid, and has a (6?) pin connector outlet in the rear of the scanner it needs to be plugged into. Once I connected it in, I had to restart the scanner, and sure enough now I see the Document Type options for color negatives, black and white etc.
For scanning documents, one doesn't use the lid at all, a white cover is inserted into the lid, and the scan happens from underneath. At least that's what I gather so far.
Funny how running into an issue starts to make one understand more about gear.
Thanks everyone for chiming in and helping! Larry at least for now the cable works, if someday it quits will have to come back and check this thread
