Using the night train you can work one day, travel overnight, and get out of the train in the morning for almost a whole extra day in the city 😉

Tom, I recall you mentioning the length of the beds - with nearly three months to go, is it too late to consider height-surgery ??

🙂 Life is sometimes easier and cheaper if you are not too tall.

The flight connections I looked at so far all arrive in the evening so I need an extra hotel night without added time for sightseeing. That's a big advantage of the overnight train.

Hradec-Kralove is about 100km East of Prague and the Foma site looks (Google Maps) to be within easy walking distance of a railway station. I will try to find out who to send an e-mail to, at Foma, about a visit - and perhaps on the Friday or Monday? As a small group it would be unlikely that we would get the red carpet treatment though! I recall reading that there was a factory shop, but the prices of Foma materials in Prague are also much lower than here in NL so that alone should not be a reason to travel out to H-K.

I will not be travelling as a family (as I don't have one) but Prague is a famous cultural destination and there will be plenty for a family to do and see, even if ones spouse and children don't want to wander about with a group of RFF'ers 🙂

There are people who want to pay less for a hotel night and people who want to have a bit more comfort. With 20 people I think it's impossible to find a compromise for accommodation.

Istanbul was my first time. Most people were located in different hotels or pensions but as far a I remember all not too far away from our morning meeting point (Ara Cafe).

I'm booking the transport to prague soon but wait with the hotel until we have more detailed plans for the day and ideas where we want to meet.

And there are also a variety of arrival and leaving dates of course. The weekend is the headline time-period but previously many people have stayed a day or so either side too, making a "long weekend" out of the trip. This further complicates making some sort of block booking, even if we could find a five-star establishment, with a darkroom, at two-star rates.

Good idea jane7l, and you might have a very good perspective on tips for Prague as an experienced visitor to the city!

as my visits were more work priority type, i'll leave guiding to the locals as much as possible 🙂

Berlin is a train ride of 4-5h away. (from downtown to downtown!) Just saying 😀

A quick look at the fares, and it looks like an arrival for 16 (Thu) and departure the 19th (Sun) are about 50% less, either train or plane (and plane being the cheapest) from Paris.

If I go I may be there the 16th late afternoon, and leave the 19th in the evening.

Just mentioning this in case other people find themselves with the same situation/dilemma and would like to meet on the 17th, ahead of the rest of the gang.

I'll be staying with friends in Slany (about 40km west of Prague) from Wed 15th to Wed 22nd. I'd love to visit the factory any time.

I'll post up some discussion points tomorrow over finding possible accommodation, things to see and do. and so on.

People who have visited the city before, and those who live there, what are the top three "this is Prague" experiences which you would mention? Most people will be around for just a couple of days so it will be handy if we come up with some sort of consensus about the parts within a plan before the Saturday morning!

I'm so there! Honestly, it's only a good two hours by train from Dresden, so if I miss this one, I'll probably never make it!

So count me in. I might back out at the last second due to a case of serious illness in the family, but I will try to be there from, say, Friday evening to Sunday evening.

PS: My three favorite tourist spots are the obvious ones: Castle, Charles Bridge, and Jewish Quarter. But really, Prague is highly photogenic throughout. Maybe I'll do a door project on the side.

you really should think about the second choice, which I highly recommand!
