I'll arrive friday afternoon and will leave monday afternoon. That's three nights. Should be doable with hand luggage only. Booked a flight. The idea of sleeping in a 1,90m long bed in the train while I'm 1,91m tall was not thrilling.

Berlin is only a 4h train ride from Prague. It's actually cheaper to go there than to the Ruhr area - I wonder why I haven't done this before.

That way I get two "free" days, from the point of view of accommodation costs, and plenty of time to wander about. Five nights should be easily do-able with a little bag I think.

There is one addition to the location-map (linked within post 54, above). On the wooded heights overlooking the river, to the West of the old centre, is an observation tower which would be very much worth a look for those interested in a panorama of the city.

Are there any other must-see locations which will be handy for visitors to know? Is everyone expecting to stay in the area of the old town, or a little further out?

How about thinking of a good meeting up point for Saturday morning? I suppose a cafe of some sort, in case of weather that is unfriendly. Is there interest in a group restaurant visit on Saturday evening? As suggested by our Prague colleagues, this may require a reservation and hence a bit of planning.

My spouse would also like to see Praha (although she is not that much interested in photography, and we have a little daughter) - does anybody plan to go with family?

Not actively planning it, but my wife and daughter would like to come along, as long as they don't have to walk the streets with the photo geeks (she stated it a bit more politely than that)...

So maybe, if there are enough non-photographing visitors, she will come along after all ... 😀

Cabs / Taxis - recommendation

question for you fellow inhabitants of Prague .. how much is a taxi per km (ca.)? I'm arriving at the Central Station (Hlavní nádraží) and I try to evaluate how much away from it I can justify to go to get a cheaper hotel room.

There is an entrance fee from CZK 30 to 45 (~1 to 1,5 EUR). 1km is priced from CZK 20 to 40 (day to late night).

AAA is an a trustworthy company safe to be used. Another good one is Profitaxi.

Both taxi companies' operators speak acceptable English and are used to work for multinationals. The best way is to call them and get a taxi / cab to be sent to the place where you are.

If I can recommend, please do not use taxi drivers who actively approach you and want to give you a ride though you do not have to be afraid. You'll may pay double or triple price. Nothing really serious ;-)

BTW: The best way to get around is the tube / metro. Cheap, reliable, safe and quite clean. Prague is not big and the centre and main attractions are in walking distance. Actually recommended.

Perhaps you can also let us know if there is some sort of multi-trip ticket or weekend-ticket for the metro, or do we all need to have lots of change for buying a ticket on every trip?

A wonderful place! Go to the fruit market in the old town. Use google to see in advance. I give you fellas a tip - all the cafe, restaurants, pizzas in the old town are 3 times costly than in the real town. So it is possible to pay for a pizza cut 10 euros and just a block away to have the same in a normal price. The Zoo is perfect, but you will have to spend a day there. There is a children toy museum in the old town - very, very interesting. Have a bear there for those who are not with you 🙂)

Have you guys decided on a time for a first meet-up on Saturday morning? Never mind the place for now, I'm just trying to decide whether I should be coming in Friday night or Saturday morning.

Last year, in Istanbul, we tipped up at the cafe from about ten in the morning on Saturday. Assuming we meet up somewhere vaguely central then would that sort of time be ok again? It gives an hour of arrivals and discussions and coffee, with enough time to head off and be constructive before everyone feels hungry again.

I have been away for the Easter weekend and hopefully everyone else was too - otherwise the quietness is worrying! How close to the old town are people staying? Are more RFF'rs planning on arriving a bit early and/or staying a day or so after the weekend?
