Last night's event in Soho was great. Dreem is a boutique woman's clothing store that specializes and features up and coming and perhaps not yet discovered new designers, but the style is elegant and lux.
The Parson's students work is on display in the storefront window and will be up for a week. More work is displayed in the front of the store.
Part of the presentation was just that: a presentation. I think what most powerfully grabbed the standing room mob was when "Maggie," a retired academic, reported a research study that having a negative attitude about aging was proven to actually shorten a lifespan by the average of 7 years.
Interesting how this hit the young people who pretty much are afraid of aging.
The level of generosity utilized to make this event was kinda beautiful. The owner of the store provided the space and has a commited program of mentoring and supporting new talent, of course Maggie collaborated and mentored these 4 students, and then this big time designer came by to critique and advise these students giving them both guidance and support.
How nice.
Pretty much the turnout was huge and the place was packed. "Maggie" was worried that many of her invites would not be able to attend since this is Fashion Week in Milan.
I saw mucho familiar faces, but of course I'm a jerk when it comes to remembering names. All these friends of Maggies kissing me and saying hello was kinda stressful because my life is so "blurry." Pretty much these people were familiar, but I was clueless how I know them. Good thing is that I'm a good performance artist because my improv skills came in handy.
The SL2 allowed me to push the ISO to 800, and I did this to just add a little punch to the store lighting. It seems that F2.0 on the APO 35 Cron is a major sweet spot. Only used F2.0 the whole night, but realize I set up the SL2 as if a Rollieflex and shot the square with the third "FN" which is no header or footer for exposure and just a 3x3 grid. I use spot metering and single point AF.
Interesting to note is that I set exposure using just the VF'er. The "A" mode is active even when using "M" manual exposure mode, and if there is a "Delta" (difference) between "A" and "M" the EVF or rear display will jump in either dimness or brightness.
Pretty much WYSIWYG in either the EVF or the rear display. Also know that the enhanced resolution of the EVF and rear display is not so different than viewng images on my EIZO, so it is pretty easy to see detail.
So the crop works well to adjust the FOV to be as if a Normal lens FOV instead of a wide. The APO 35 Cron has a mucho fast AF, so pretty much shooting is crazy-fast. The Maestro 3 processor also speeds things up because the buffer never really gets used even if you shoot in three round bursts like a hitman: stomach; chest; and then head shot.
The crowds I had to work around, and in one group shot using the "wings" to fall into a 4x5 aspect ration ended up being both useful and practical. I panned left and panned right, and in both cases I could conform into a 4x5 shot. Not so hard, or abstract.
I also found that my compositions were tighter than if I shot with the 35 as a wide FF. This digital "zooming" and format adaption already has me spoiled. For Maggie it seems like shooting the square will dominate.
The 50 Lux now morphing into being used mostly on my old SL as a portrait lens, or when I want to do "night stalking" in NYC.
I carried a spare battery because the OEM SL2 battery had only been deep cycled twice. It is suggested that initially three deep cycles are required to condition the battery, and last night I simply left the camera on for 3 1/2 hours and intermittently shot about 320 images.
Then I chimped the camera mucho to draw down the battery further, but even after 4 hours I did not fully deplete the OEM battery. The old SL battery ended up just being a backup.
At these events I generally get some opportunities to get some shots for my own work. I talked with this gal who does PR for Neuman Marcus who was well dressed and was a beauty. I ended up taking only two shots: I Rollieflexed her shooting the square; and when I chimped the shots she wanted them.
These same shots end up being also really nice 4x5 shots (about 39.4 MP). How nice. The files are kinda big, but my eight year old MacBook Pro is not really straining and remains fast. My lazy slacker trick is to "compartmentalize" and restrict this MacBook to only Lightroom and photography.
I have an IBook, and sixth generation IPAD that is still being sold retail at Apple Stores, and an IPAD Mini as well as an IMAC. The IBook has a DVD reader/writer and I happen to own the Student/Teacher version of Lightroom 5. LR5 is what I have installed on my MacBook Pro, so I'll be running LR5 in both and have a backup. One IPAD I'll dedicate for MP4 viewing, and the other for when I blog and have a website.
This is my way of recycling and also is practical because all this old stuff still works. I actually love how each tool is specialized, and for me, a very easily confused guy, this makes it simple for me.
"I never knew anyone with a complicated life that is happy," I say. "Simple and free is for me," I also say.
Also will be great to have two stand alone LR5 systems because eventually I'll get a floor standing printer for color. "Don't tell Maggie." No Creative Cloud for me: Cheap-cheap-cheap... Pretty much LR5 is good enough for me, and know I only tweak images, not a lot of post processing. You know me: I'm a lazy slacker. Pretty much the stuff that gets published on Maggie's blog is straight out of the camera. How lazy is that?
I hope to bone-up on the video function by the Meet-Up. I'll be shooting MP4's 16x9. Next step is to learn how to do cut edits. Instagram like four 15 second segments to make a one minute clip which is the limit.
For Instagram TV the aspect ratio changes to 4x5. Know that 16x9 is the aspect ratio of a cell phone full screen.
The SL2 makes it easy for even a non tech throwback like me. Leica made a clever camera. Kinda perfectly designed for me. BTW I think the SL in SL2 is short for "SLacker."

Ok folks, I still want to participate tomorrow but from the wilds of south Philly. If someone can compile a list of winners and losers, I have stuff I want to send to people. This is not garbage, by the way. Here's a short list:
Konica Auto-Reflex T3 with 50mm lens
Konica C35 Automatic (first version)
Olympus XA
Manfrotto 3265 pistol grip tripod head
Several mechanically working Konica Auto-Reflex TC bodies (bad meters, perfect exposure)
A few Konica and Konica mount lenses
Lots of parts of cameras and lenses.
So, someone come up with a list of who's who amongst the rabble and I will send this stuff out as I'm able.

Phil,
The Meet-Up is Sunday.
Since I have a "Grip Fetish" I'm interested in the Manfrotto Pistol Grip Tripod head.
Actually what is it?
As usual I'll write up and post a report.

I have a pack of each Fuji FP-100C and FP-3000b. If anyone is interested, I can bring them on Sunday. Expired, but were refrigerated. Looking to get $90 for both or to trade for something useful to me. I had it for use on camera that is gone now.
Also, might have some more stuff for sale/trade.

Sam,
I'm recycling a lot of small items, culling down, via a grab bag. For flavor I have added some rare stuff, perhaps not camera related anyways in the spirit of recycling.
I likely will bring some stuff to barter. Could be a cool episode of "Let's Make A Deal." "Come on down," I say.
Also I have a Voightlander Bessa 1 for you. It is clean but the shutter sticks and the lens has a film/haze. Clean bellows in the least just in case you still have that trophy Bessa 2 with the 105 Heliar that stomped me in the cheap camera contest. Beat me by a few pennies due to sales tax.
Boy was I humiliated. The agony of defeat... LOL.
Our planet is a mess. Let's try a big effort to recycle I say. Bring your camera junk so it can be recycled and used. BTW a lot of my stuff are just small items like filters that I could sell, but you know me: I'm a lazy-slacker.
I know Christian has mucho cameras yet to build and design. I already gave him some thumb screws and a rather "loud" oversized mushroom button to restore the cable release on his late black Linhof 220 that gave me "You suck factor."

It's pretty cool for quickly changing orientation, I just don't have a heavy lens to hang off it anymore. I used to use it with my 300mm when shooting high school football games.

Phil,
We will miss your presence. I hope you will make it down sometime in the near future! I was looking forward to see some of those cine cameras I keep hearing about.
I'm digging through some boxes of stuff to see what I have that I don't need. One thing is a back door for a 250 shot 35mm back from I don't know what camera (maybe pentax?). I dreamt up a whole panorama to be built around it, but it is just not something I am going to put any time or energy in now. If you are curious it is yours.
Sam, that Noblex is mighty interesting. I definitely want to check it out.
I have a Fuji GA645i that I've been using a lot, but I have burnt out on. I can bring it if someone is interested in it. Otherwise it is going to ebay given the obscene amount that these go for now.
As a project trade I can also bring 2/3s of a Linhof Technar that I got parts for, but is not important to me given that it is just duplication of what I already have. It is basically a Kardan frame and a Kardan graflock back. What is needed is a Kardan board, a helical, a lens, and perhaps a ground glass or a roll film back. I have a cold shoe and a tripod plate for it. It may want a grip. Anyone already with Linhof parts (Cal, Joe...) should be interested. Offer me anything interesting!
As a prize I'll throw in the perfect flash for a film leica, the Metz 20 BC 6. It is very slim on top of an M. It uses 3x AA batteries, and has a clip on diffuser for a 28mm lens.

Actually I’m trying to go the other way... I’m going to bring a linhof mono rail camera for who ever wants it. All you would need is a lens board, lens, and film holders to have a nice 4x5.
So another free camera for the asking...

I just found out something cool about the Nikon FA with the MD15 motor drive. If you pull out the advance lever before taking a shot, then use the shutter button on the motor drive, it will expose the film but it will not advance to the next frame until you push the camera advance lever back in to what is normally the off position. This makes it a really quiet camera with a motor drive.

Phil, we knew what you meant. Get better soon!
Joe,
Very generous.
If that is the Kardan color, then whoever walks out with it, should be interested in building a Technar too. They are perfect partner cameras as all the parts are interchangeable.
I know pramodh is dying to get back into 4x5.
If anyone happens to have a 58mm filter or hood or anything else with that thread size that they don’t need, I’m interested.

So it is a Linhof Kardan Color 45S that Joe basically bought for parts, and now I have the remains/car-cuss.
So I also "day-traded" with Sam and now will present a GEAR ALERT of a 1933 black paint Leica III (nickle knobs) with matching 50/3.5 nickle Elmar. Condition is clean-clean-clean, just a touch of brassing on the knobs, but the body is so clean one might think its a repaint. The Elmar is flawless except for the mild brassing. The camera is ready to shoot. Know that the VF'er is the best I have ever seen on a LTM and I would even say it rivals a M in brightness.
I think one reason this camera is like a time machine is that it also came in a "never-ready" leather case. Another reason is that Sam is a big time collector so he locates and finds gear in remarkable condition.
Kinda funny upon greeting Sam I just handed him the grand prize before he whipped out any gear. The Grand Prize was this complete digital camera kit that I rescued from "Maggie" that is this flat camera that is about the size of a pack of cigarettes, but half as thin. Case, extra battery, SD card, charger, and I believe even the instructions.
Kinda funny how Veronica quickly got possession of the Grand Prize. Like father like daughter. LOL.
So "Snarky Joe" bought in a dead mint F3P to torment me. Of course he paid "No-money." "You suck Joe," I say because it has "You suck factor."
So somehow I ended up taking home more cameras than I brought. How did that happen? "I was just minding my own business..."

I am so sick of being sick. This is my second week. My cold moved into my sinuses and inner ears. Now I can't hear out of my right ear, underwater in my left, can't breathe well and hope I have the immune system to defeat this before it reaches my brain. My balance is off and between that, the hearing, the malaise, and missing so much clinical internship time, I'm getting really depressed.

Our planet is in a mess, and in this year's event I tried to recycle a lot of my gear that was not being used. I was cool with gifting stuff, and in a ways I was doing what Chris did last year by basically downsizing and cleaning up.
I bought this Manfrotto light stand that I literally found about a block away from the Rochard on Third Avenue. The forensics are likely that some hipster student called an UBER loaded up, but left this light stand behind.
So at home I was loading up all this stuff to bring to the Meet-Up and in some nice yellow Nikon bags that I saved from PhotoPlusExpo is a "Tether Tools" flyer and inside they use a light stand to mount a Mac display that is not the IMac but the higher end model.
I suddenly remember that my old boss abandoned one of these old Mac's with the intergrated CPU into the display. Kinda perfect for me because I rescued the Student and teacher version of Lightroom 5 on CD's which so happens to be the same version I got for free with my eight year old M-Monochrom. No Adobe Creative Cloud for me, remember I'm cheap-cheap-cheap...
Know that this Mac has a DVD reader/writer, so now I have a tethered computer dedicated to my SL2, complete with a stand. Although the SL2 is 47.3 MP and creates huge files my old eight year old Macbook Pro still does fine because I limit this laptop to only photography. Compartmentalizing allows me to be cheap-cheap-cheap.
It had dawned on me that I have an IbooK, a sixth generation current IPAD, an IPAD Mini, and all these "vintage" computers that I can "Compartmentalize" and dedicate specialized work flows without any handicaps.
So "Snarky Joe" might regret gifting me that Linhof car-cuss, because it seems this morning I was particularly late for work, because I had another one of my episodes where I kinda regressed back more than 4 decades when I was a gene-E-Us/penis of my younger days in art school.
I go into my wreck of a studio and look at the Linhof Car-cus, I pull out my Gepi cold light source light table, I measure this Fisher Bio Tech Electrophoresis Systems "Photo Documentation Hood," and like a "Lego-Master" it hits me that I can build a scanner using my 55/2.8 AIS Macro, 52mm Nikon macro reversing ring, SL2, Novaflex F-mount adapter, Leica M to L adapter, Linhof monorail Kardan 45S, "Photo Documentation Hood" and Gepi light table to make a very high end scanning system with a tethered Mac display that pretty much somehow I have all the parts.
How did this happen?
"Don't tell Maggie." LOL. Know that Maggie did not take notice of the huge Kardan 45 S, nor the parts I secured from Devil Christian to build a Linhof version of a "Handy" 4x5 camera.
Now realize that the Photo Documentation Hood has been laying around my studio for about half a decade, and pretty much it was a stand for my bike helmet that lay upon my cluttered and abandoned JUKI commercial sewing machine, but somehow the larger base exactly matches the 8x12 aperture of the Gepi light table.
It would be pretty easy to make it so the Photo Documentation Hood has a bellows to adjust the light intensity. Know that light fall off is "Inverse Square Law" so a small change in distance has a dramatic change in light intensity.
This scanning system I'm going to build out reminds me of when I worked at Grumman. I was mighty clever back then, and pretty much knew where all the resources and parts were in the various plants on a 500 acre complex. Even though I can't remember names I do kinda have a good visual memory.
I remember then I came back Bethpage Long Island from Los Alamos, after being away for a year and a half, this engineer Lief mentioned that after I left the could not find anything. He then asked if I remembered where these custom potted power supplies were stored, and I walked over to a steel cabinet, opened the door, removed a box from the third shelf, and then handed him the box of power supplies he claims he spent two days looking for.
Of course he was annoyed. "Why do people love me?" LOL.
Call me "Mister Modular" but like Lego Blocks I can always make the Kardan into a camera. I was checking out my 70mm, and various 120 backs as well as Devil Christian's old 1952 Linhof tech IV-Tech V.
This old Linhof Devil Christian bought as a Car-Cuss and built it up into a complete camera. How obsessive is that? Mighty stubborn also. Ha-ha. What I love about this Linhof is that it dates from back in the day when Linhof actually used real leather to cover their cameras and this 4x5 has mucho worn leather that displays this wonderful patina.
Also in cleaning up and gathering up gear I remembered that my 3013 JOBO tank can be used for 4x5 as well as an inversion tank for three 15 foot 70mm reels where basically I could develop about 15 reels worth of 120 equiv.

I recycled a really nice soft black strap I took off of one of "Maggie's" bag.
Pretty much she gets so much free stuff that I garbage pick through the overflow. This wrist strap looks great on my "New" 1933 black paint Leica III with 50 nickel Elmar.
Mucho style. Know that I donate lots of Maggie's overflow to Housing Works. I have this coat that some designer sent her that converts into a tent. I'll be dropping it off unused to someone that can use it. I can't make this stuff up.
BTW Christian is correct. All the Linhof stuff is kinda modular. Pretty much I'm playing around as if I have Lego Blocks. In a ways I feel like a 5 or 7 year old. LOL.
I regress back even further. I'm so immature. When will I ever grow up?
